An elephant orphanage and the temple of Buddha
Located at Pinnawala village, the Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants. Originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the orphaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests, today has about 70 elephants that are nurtured and taken care of on a daily basis. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic constitutes the premier Buddhist Institution of Sri Lanka. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and has been a political focus since centuries. It is believed that the temple is built on the tooth of Lord Buddha after his cremation In India.

On the other side of the road is the famous Mlesna Tea Center where you could have a fresh cup of tea.Seetha Amman temple is believed to be the site where Sita was held captive by king Ravana, where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her as per the epic, Ramayana. On the rock face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of Ravana's elephant.

The lake is surrounded by many large businesses in the city. It is a recreational area with interesting flora and fauna.
