This is a real city oasis, our favorite Chennai hotel by far, with discreet, efficient service yet radiating an atmosphere of leisure in this otherwise strictly business city. This time we had an early check in, really too early, and when we saw Devendar waiting at the exit, all smiles and genuine warmth, we were in gay abandon. After winding the roads of the Shringara Chennai, as the city is called, we were at the portico of what was once the house of Lady Connemara, the estranged wife of Lord Connemara the Governor of Madras, who was always found in the company of beautiful lassies at the sight of whom the lady Connemara walked out on him and stayed in this house, then known as The Albany. The hotel, which is turning 125 years old this year, is on a mission to recapture the old-world glamour of its past with glossy butler service, languid English high teas and vintage car rides. Quite fortunately for me, I was with my wife, no lassies and no arm-candies like the then philanderer governor and hence we had a warm welcome from my friend and accommodation manager Saniz Pottaikkad with a retinue of beautiful girls at the portico and the check in was all in a dream-phase. Actually the Connemara hospitality had taken off as soon as we landed at the airport and were escorted to the hotel. The hotel is charming but not prepossessing. Although the exterior is very attractive, enter and you are transported into another era (it's been here since 1891, albeit much changed), with grand, gracious public spaces, wide corridors, and highland rooms, all tastefully and luxuriously decorated. Book a room that opens onto the delightful lush courtyard where comfortable loungers are arranged around a large sparkling pool (the modern suites or heritage ones, both stupendous) - this is the perfect place to recover after a bout of shopping at next door Spencer Plaza (or the many other Chennai options). Facilities are top-notch (pillow menus comparable with the Leelas and the like), staff superb and food delicious: a recipe for total comfort. Good large suites and rooms, good atmosphere and food. The hotel was getting groomed for the Easter, a great ringer of good times, no pun intended, unleashed a million reasons to smile. The first reason was Vivanta by Taj. My wife and I Immersed ourselves to the unmatched hospitality of the hotel staff, many of them familiar and those who were new and unfamiliar lined up showing their affection and warmth in a way peculiar to the Taj Signature hospitality. Our suite, 123 - easy to remember had been bedecked with blowers, basil leaves and other paraphernalia for welcoming our deities. Later we would come to know Ms. Richa Bhalla the house keeper and her assistant Akshaya as also the unparalleled florist Gopi, whom I knew for quite a few years, whom we were going to meet for the first time had taken pains to ascertain our preferences from the older staff to settle us without any hassles. The lunch was at the Verandah that day and every other day, for at least two meals a day, including the sumptuous and multi-menu breakfast only the Connemara can boast of, among the Vivanta Hotels, the hospitality, love and affection that poured in abundance from the chefs Natarajan, Gopi and Rajendran, only to be surpassed by the individual attention bestowed by Bhaskaran and Anthony who left no stone unturned to make us feel at home whenever before or after a hectic day we found time to feed our starved stomachs. I would never forget the indulgence of the Chefs Natarajan and Gopi, who concocted our daily offerings to deities, be it a rice jiggery kheer or the impossible modak, of which the chef Gopi proved to be an expert. At our request on the penultimate night, Gopi produced at short notice the nihari mutton, smooth and jellied meat melting in the mouth with khameri roti to go with. The Verandah was our usual reclaim, though due to our uncertain schedule of work, we missed our Raintree soiree, but we were privileged to taste the signature varieties of the Raintree at the Verandah like Elaneer Payasam, a kind of kheer with tender coconuts. As we returned late every day after work and busy with our Puja - As usual Gopi and Simon took care of our special flowers requirement - the Verandah was our evening bistro significant for taste, variety and tranquility. The quality and quantity of food is good. Restaurant Manager Saravanan and his team - Bhaskaran and Anthony took special care of us. Gopi the chef was my wife's favorite. He concocted so many dishes as per our choice in a jiffy every time we dined at for the Verandah as also the Pool. Fantastic, superbly clean, excellent service, terrific staff, wonderful atmosphere, splendid breakfast. A haven of tranquility which we needed during our busy trip. Shopping Tip: the Spencer's plaza mall, around the corner, is quite grotty, while the newer express avenue is a couple of blocks away. We were unable to find a supermarket in Spencer's, but EA had one. The Spencer's, however, has lots and lots of handicraft shops. Bibliophiles will like Higginbotham's book shop a short distance up Anna Salai aka Mount Road. Throughout the stay we enjoyed the signature hospitality of the Taj Associates, reception to room attendance are very courteous and caring. The hotel was ideally located so you can travel around, especially if you are engaged in a business visit you will really love the location, had dinner at the Verandah rrestaurant - amazing food, service provided by the staff was spectacular. Honestly I am flattered with the service, WiFi Internet is free but the connections are which kills your core. Restaurant Tip: Visit Raintree restaurant. Delicious food with impeccable service. My wife's comments as soon as we were booked into this hotel for the seventh time were "I think this is the best hotel we have ever stayed in". The staff could not have been more helpful in any aspect and were very friendly, never too busy to stop for a chat to help out. I would easily recommend this hotel to anyone going to Chennai for a break. Mr. Ahmar Siddiqui, General Manager was courtesy embodied, with a flattening smile and showered warmth even in his busy schedule as the hotel was preparing for the Easter Bash. Sanij Pottakad was kind enough to book us a special session at the unique spa, where we had achieved heavenly bliss at the nimble but strong fingers of Ayang and Zen for a couple spa package. Divine and soothing; blissful and relaxing. No comparison. Entering the realm of the Taj Connemara is to enter into a delightfully calm, scented world where one feels cosseted, soothed, and at peace in the midst of hectic central Chennai. Despite the somewhat jarring presence of airport-style security on the front steps (a necessary evil it seems in light of 26/11), the welcome feels sanguine and safe, and as it did each and every time I entered, we were always greeted warmly and gently guided through the security protocol. The warm professionalism of the entire staff, from the front desk to trainees, cleaners, security guards, chefs and service staff in all the restaurants, was a delight at every turn. It seemed these people were genuinely pleased that we had picked their hotel to stay at, and made it their business to make sure we knew it. The breakfast buffet is diverse, abundant and delicious, room-service fast, the pool a welcome spot to relax in Nirvana !! The hotel environment is terrific with a huge lobby and grand staircase. One thing worth to say is their retrained staff always provided whatever info we asked for. The staff at the reception, though I missed Mr. Ashirbad and Ms. Joselyn. She had gone back to Goa, with a bonny baby, a new arrival. God bless her. The bell boys speak good English and they all make you feel at home. We enjoyed our breakfast or meals every time and all the time, the staff was always there to give a helping hand and I can see that they want you to be really comfortable. All out to make your stay a memorable one. My wife felt like a queen getting the best attention every time we visited the restaurant. I would like to stay at the Taj Connemara again and again. On the day of checkout, since we had an early morning flight to catch, Chef Gopi insisted and Saravanan, made us accept that they would hand over some takeaways so we would have no problem to start a busy week. No problem, Saravanan had got it all ready for even at the early hours we had the takeaways at the reception with freshly made puris and a variety of morning delicacies. Ahmar Siddiqui, the GM was there on the second day to join us at the lobby. He is cornucopia of information with regard to many a Taj property in the Taj Group in a few of which he has worked. On the day of checkout when we were being escorted to the waiting car, Saniz asked, "when can we expect you back next? " When I replied it would be July next, he exclaimed, "So long? ". Saniz! You should talk to the Sales Manager about the prices too, dear! Connemara, you had me ensconced as usual encapsulating the for another day'! Did you hear Sidney Sheldon?
I stayed at the Park Hyatt hotel, for 2 days, for my friends marriage. The hotel is grand and western type. Personally I loved my room, which was standard, with King size bed, lots of space, quite chic, a huge window with plenty of light into the room, artistic design.
The staff were cool, always welcoming and executing their work with a smile. They were very courteous and very respectful. The service was great and the rooms were so spacious.
The breakfast is one of the best you can have in Chennai. I will never forget the undeniable service and efforts by the staff at the Dining. The presentation of dishes was awesome. My choice was always the south Indian menu and enjoyed to the last bit.
And the spa, swimming pool was great, Everything was sophisticated and modern and absolutely praise-worthy.
My stay was full of pleasure, and it was a pleasant stay beyond words. One of the reason I will go back to Chennai is because of Park Hyatt Chennai. It was an Outstanding service & relaxing place. I will come back to stay here with my friends. I highly recommend everyone to experience a stay at the park hyatt hotel. Don't miss the pheonix mall, which is very near to this hotel. I always love Chennai, loved to come here.
Massage Parlour and Hairdressing: Very good - Excellent.
Bar: Was pretty good - not crowded, in fact, only one other person was there.
Cons: There's some repair/renovation work (our room was on the 7th floor), constant banging, hammers, etc. We requested desk to either move us or stop the noise. It took them an hour, and repeated call to get that stopped. If there's renovation, don't sell rooms affected.
Bathroom sink: Water flows out real slow. One guy did come out and looked at it, and stated that it was OK. If water is ankle deep after a shower, the sink is not draining.
Room Service: Very slow. It can take any where from 30 mins to maybe an hour. Hotels make a lot of money on room service. The least they can do is expedited service.
Housekeeping: We were two people. They provide only 2 small bottles of water, and have to remind them everyday to replenish and give 2 more bottles.
Check-in/out: Easy and fast.
Breakfast: We stayed around 7 days. The menu changed very little. The offerings are limited stuff like oatmeal should be normal.
The aggravating thing was, there was always shortage of plates (everyday). One has to ask for a plate and the waiters get it for you.
The service at the restaurant and the front desk were always good, respectful and eager to help. But the staff can only do so much.
I visited this hotel behind the TCS and scope International building in OMR to spend some quality time with my wife and daughter because of 5 continuous holidays and I was not disappointed. The hotel was approx 30 kms away from my residence in Chennai and that was the only negative.
I reached the hotel around 11:00 AM on 22nd Oct 2015. Within 5mins, the check-in process was completed and I was guided to my room by the staff.
I was given the option of a couple of rooms, one which was very big and spacious and the other a little small. Me and my wife settled for the smaller room since the ventilation and ambience was much better in this room than the other.
The first thing we check-in any room is the bathroom and it appeared really neat and clean. It had a geyser which meant that we did not have to request for any hot water for bathing specifically nor did we have to stick to the standard bath timings during which hot water is usually available. This meant that we could sleep to our will not having to worry about the availability of hot water especially if we wake up late. The room was very neatly done. The curtains and the bedsheet were all in white, giving the room a real Royal feeling. We switched on the AC and the TV to see if they were also on par with the other amenities in the room.
The AC was very good and the best part was that when you go out locking the door, all electrical appliances except for the AC get switched off. Imagine coming back to the room after doing some shopping or a return from the beach. One would be completely famished. But the cool room was a kind of welcome invitation to us wanting us to spend more time at this hotel. I have not seen anything of this before in my stay in any of the hotels earlier.
The disappointment was clearly the TV. While it was a big LED television, there was no package with the reputed players like Tata sky/Airtel/Dish TV/Reliance and I think that the hotel had tied up with a local cable TV service provider. The quality of feed was poor and the worst by my favourite Hindi channels like Star Plus, Sony and Zee TV were not available. Even cartoon, Sports and music channels were very few to name.
The food was really good. The breakfast was unlimited with 2 times on any given day. Idly was 1 of the regular items on a daily basis and the 2nd item was a Upma/Plain dosa/onion uthappam on the subsequent days. One could have these items with the nostalgia of home cooked food. It was really good. I really loved the Upma which was served on the 2nd day of our stay at the hotel. It was very soft and much above what I could expect out of it. Never ever have I had such a good Upma at any of my hotel stays. It was really good. The other items like Idly, Dosa and onion uthappam were also good. For the lazy laid backs, you have the option of ordering from the room but do not expect unlimited serves in that case.
The hotel serves Masala/Ginger tea also and they were superb on one of the days but OK on the other days. The onion pakoda ordered during one of our stays really went on well along with the Tea. Although we never had the opportunity to have Lunch during any of our 4 days stay at the hotel, We had dinner on a couple of days at the hotel. The Aloo paratha and the Sambar rice that we ordered were really good. The veg biriyani was equally good as well. One of the really positive things is that you can also carry outside food to the hotel.
Hotel staff were very prompt and courteous with their service. Be it ordering the food or changing the bedsheet, they were right there.
I would definitely go to this hotel if given a chance once again. Its proximity to ECR, good restaurants available in and around, Adyar zoo, beaches, malls. You have it all. Yes, I would think twice before visiting this place in rainy season and that is because the road which houses the hotel building in not very good. It rained during one of the days during our stay and the roads became very filthy then.
I stayed in this hotel on 7th floor. Rooms are good on this floor and are spacious one. There is problem in this floor about some damp patches in rooms or in bathrooms. In my bathroom hot water was not coming in wash basin however, in tub it was okay. Bed side and bathroom phone was not working which even on complaint was not attended in 3 days. Although, there was another phone which is on table below LCD was working fine.
Service in the hotel is poor except restaurant. Food is good. Breakfast is lavish one and reasonable range of vegetarian and non vegetarian items. In this hotel food is on higher price brackets. So, while staying you need to evaluate about your fooding but for staying this location is okay. This has very good Gym and Spa. Although, during my visit SPA steam and Sona was not working due to some mechanical failure. But since they are running club there so there is no issues with that. Breakdown can happen any time. Overall, it is good place to stay. Various airlines also keep there staff there so environment is vibrant.
