Guwahati, the gateway to North East, with the capital of Assam, Dispur, within its confines, beckons travellers with its charming hospitality. A darshan of Maa Kamakhya, its protector, was on the cards from 2013 when my marriage was planned and finally in October 2015, I was brought to Maa.
Guwahati, nestled at the foothills of Garo hills of Meghalaya on the banks of the mighty masculine Brahmaputra and a stepping stone to the verdant forest cover of Assam at world famous Kaziranga, Pobitora and Manas home to the one horned rhinos and the gentle pachyderms, to the delightful world's largest freshwater island at Majuli along with the world's smallest one too at Umananda, both in the lap of the roaring Brahmaputra, acres and to the acres of tea gardens towards Dibrugarh and as mentioned above, home to the presiding deities of Maa at Kamakhya and Baba Bholenath at Sibsagar, is a must visit destination to understand the gentle greatness of the Ahom kingdom and to enjoy the other offerings of north east, particularly Shillong, Cherrapunjee, Mawsynram and Mablung of neighboring Meghalaya as well as Imphal and Tawang.
Encompassing all the moods above is the wonderful little resort, the Brahmaputra Jungle resort. Very conveniently located on the Dibrugarh highway towards Jorhat, it is just 32 km from the flights and trains arriving at Guwahati. Discounting the traffic jungle of Guwahati, it is an hours drive from the airport. Boards at the highway are a little difficult to locate in the dark but the resort staff constantly guided our driver after we had overshot the turning. And then, our stay was truly a delightful experience. The entry to the resort from the highway has tea gardens soothing your sight.
A very polite, courteous and warm staff made sure every amenity was provided. The rooms had everything, down to the shoe cleaner too. Do carry shaving kit, barber is a little way off. The rooms are Assam Bungalow types among trees of various kinds on gentle slopes. A right mix of beverages complementing the mouth watering ample portions of veg and non veg fare on offer simply makes my mouth water now, the cooking, the masalas and the taste were heavenly, please do try their Kadai Paneer, it is the best I have had in India. Try the various local non veg fares too, you will carry the memories forever.
Various activities including elephant rides, pony rides, swimming, trekking and indoor activities are designed to keep the guests occupied and give a feel of the north east. It is peaceful to walk around in the landscape and meet the brood of ducks along the little pond. I am coming back there again to unwind, as this time my time was short and purpose was visiting Maa. See you all there!
Friendly staff & very professional, comfortable bed
Excellent location. Very friendly staff and very professional, always courteous and helpful. Extremely clean, very comfortable bed and very quiet. I appreciated the managers of the place and recommend it to everybody. Really it was very nice and memorable visit to Guwahati for me.
This is a very conveniently located hotel if you have to go all around the town or you plan to do some shopping. Rooms are large with a very comfortable bed with clean linen and plenty of pillows. Soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste are provided, and a large, fluffy towel. TV and cable service is very good. A refrigerator is provided, stocked with a selection of soft drinks and mineral water (chargeable if consumed). Room service is quick, the food is pretty good and reasonably priced. The chicken fried rice was exceptional! But the complimentary breakfast is just not tolerable, as it is not up to the hotel's standards. It is situated on a busy road, so getting transport is no issue. There are plenty of restaurants and eateries outside, from the high end to the road-side food stalls. Opposite the hotel, inside a small lane, is the excellent Maugham Garden restaurant, which serves really great muslim food. Also the big shopping centers are nearby. There are some issues with comfort, as the hotel is not new, and maintenance does not seem to be a big priority with the owners. The bathroom fittings have seen better days and need urgent replacement. The window AC made a lot of noise, same with the fridge. Together with the bathroom exhaust fan, there was a racket going on! For sitting, there is a sort of cushioned bench with a flat hard back, and a wide shelf for a table. Overall, the most comfortable activity in the room is to sit on the bed and watch TV. There is no draft from the AC, and you can drown out the noise by turning up the TV sound! Stay here only if you get a good discount on the rack rate.
I arrived at the City Palace from Shillong at around 8 and chose to stay in there cause I found the hotel to be the best camp to catch my Rajdhani express destined to New Delhi via Siliguri the following morning at 6. After a tedious journey, I felt lucky to have landed near the hotel by the tourist cab from Shillong as incidentally the taxi stand happened to be at stones throw from the hotel. It was so nice that I need not waste my time and energy to locate a good hotel in the place burning with heat. As I headed to the Hotel I was amused to find the lift boy help me out. Next I was relaxed to find a room of my liking which was readily provided by the charming receptionists who were responding smilingly to my queries with regard to what the hotel would be providing.
After checking in a good shower was so refreshing that I almost forgot the jerks experienced during my drive from Shillong. A sip of VAT 69 with the light music in the Bar downstairs was really sending me into pleasure, a bliss which I wished more and more but as I had to rest and refresh myself for tomorrows journey I finished my shot and came to my room. The dinner was ready on the table as ordered. The boiled rice with chicken curry accompanied by Dal, sabji and of course tandoori roti was mind blowing. Next morning I was awaken at 5 by hotels timer-counter as pre-requested last night and had a glass of water as I generally avoid eating before journey and hence there was no need to bother about breakfast. It was really amazing to have spent a night in that hotel where housekeeping, food and the response from the staff was very very good. The place shall be my future transit camp for onward journeys.
I went to Guwahati for an interview and I stayed at Prince Hotel at Paltanbazar. The room was big enough but it was not so clean. The location of the hotel is very good near the Guwahati railway station. All I can say it is a good hotel. The rate of the hotel is quite affordable. But there is a rule they will take the advance more than the rate of the hotel and they will return the excess money when you checkout. The television quality is very poor, an old model TV with low cable quality. I and my friends booked for a four bed room. There were four separate bed but they provide less blanket. The most important thing is there is a bar in the hotel. The staff was very friendly. The housekeeping was good they clean the room after a certain period. At last it's a good hotel at a low cost.
