Set in a very humble part of Kozhikode, the hotel does not look very promising from the outside. However, if you are in need of rest and homely pampering, this is an undiscovered gem. The staff were absolutely first class and you will find it a quaint and peaceful place if you want to escape from it all for a few days.
Given that the weather was very hot and there was not much to explore on foot, in the immediate vicinity, you can enjoy tasty local food and even the odd variation of Continental or North Indian or other World cuisine on request. As for the rest of the day, you can lol in absolute sloth in a fairly comfortable room, with comfortable Air-Conditioning, hot water for a relaxing bath and catch up on TV viewing or read a selection of newspapers from what's on offer at the reception area.
If you find the toilet flush or Air-Conditioning giving some trouble, the issue will be attended to with great speed and efficiency. The room cleaners were hard working and will ensure that your room is spic and span in the blink of an eye and with friendly smiles and cheerful efficiency.
The hotel has a bar which is very delicately positioned so that the inmates and the patrons of the bar do not need to cross each other. Thus, if you like your liquor, you can go to the conveniently located bar and have some beer and some very tasty snacks. I recommend the batter fried anchovies. It is not a place for women though, so if you are of the female persuasion, do ensure that you have a strong, sensible and grounded male partner, preferably a Malayalee to accompany you.
Again, should you be in search of an exotic experience, just across the hotel there is a Toddy place, set in a rustic and verdant nook. The toddy is fantastic and so are the snacks. But you will have to brave many tipsy red eyes if you chose to go across and get yourself some fine toddy to have in the cool decency of your room and that is not the least of the dangers. The hotel sits next to a narrow Highway and the traffic has no regard for anything.
Right next to the hotel, to your right as you exit is a little supermarket which, mostly has anything you might require. Since the main city was quite far away, I bought some halwas and fish pickles from there and they were pretty good. A tender coconut halwa was outstanding.
The manager, Mr. Manoj Babu was extremely decent and helpful. The Maitre D, Mr. Nasir, was worth his weight in gold. He will ensure that you get to eat just what you want with reasonable notice and will look after you with tender elegance. What more could one ask for when one weary night, we could get a hot khichadi?
This is a 5 star experience of hospitality at a very reasonable price. For me, I could get some well-earned rest and catch up on reading.
In August 2015, we had to take a short and hectic work trip to Calicut; a city well known for its historic ports, old & lively heritage markets and the delicious food. After the completing the task assigned to us the travel to the Hyson hotel from Calicut Airport seemed lengthy since we were so exhausted after the long day but actually it was around 23 Km only and properly situated at the prime location inside the city. The check-in process was smooth and the staff was courteous & helpful. The room was neat, spacious, good and aptly cooled with all the necessary facilities and pleasantries. It was refreshing to get fresh and relax in the room. Since we checked in well after the dinner time we got a chance to taste the delicacies from the Famous and Old Paragon Restaurant which was at a walking distance from the Hotel. WiFi facility was available at moderate speed. The room was so calm and cosy that I slipped into sleep with the TV on. Woke up feeling fresh the next day late. The view from room was just the morning traffic. We had the complimentary breakfast which had a number of variety healthy options to choose from and a live counter for the Kerala delicacy Appam and other egg items. The checkout process was also smooth and fast. We made it to the airport on time to board the flight back to Mumbai. Overall it was a nice and a pleasant short stay at Hyson Heritage.
We were forced to stay in Calicut for one night on our way back from Wayanad due to bad flight timings. However, after seeing the property we decided to stay for 2 nights instead!
We chose the cottage room, thinking that it would be a good room for 2 right in front of the backwater. However, the room is really small and there is no view of the backwater as it is covered by trees. We were upgraded to the suite room and that was just perfect. The views, the scenery, the room!
I took a massage every day. The consulting doctor - Neerja - is a lovely lady, professional and precise. She went out of her way to make us comfortable and address our issues. The setting of the massage centre is brilliant and no matter how much I write about it the words won't be enough. Even the staff was just perfect.
The downside of this hotel is the food. Considering its the Welcome group we did expect better food. Even the tomato soup was just bad.
The hotel does have a houseboat one can book and that experience is really worth it!
Sourabham is exactly what a home-stay ought to be - a 'real home away from home' experience! The charming elderly couple running the place pampered us like family members, fussing over our smallest need. The welcome was very warm, with an 'exotic' tropical welcome drink. There is a very interesting collection of trinkets, bric-a-brac, and rare family photographs adorning the walls and cup-boards in the living room! Very, very charming!
The initial pleasantries exchanged, we were shown to our very expansive a/c room on the first floor, with its own, vast 'private' balcony looking over the greenery/lawns around the place! It also had a sit-out, beside a huge bay-window, over-looking the garden in the back-yard! The wardrobes and cup-boards were large enough for guests to place their belongings in the room. There was more than enough place for the extra 'comfy' mattress to be laid out on the floor (beside the king bed) at night. The air-con worked fine. The bathroom was huge; and well-equipped with toiletries, hot shower, bath towels, etc. It also had nice views of the greenery around! Perfect!
The setting of the home-stay is in North Beypore, a very serene and green suburb of Calicut (Kozhikode). There is a fruit and vegetable garden inside the home-stay itself, and one could well spend a lot of time here, reading a book under the abundant shade of the trees around, with only the pleasant chirping of birds for company! The drive from the airport took us just under half-an-hour!
Best Experience: The dinner and breakfast were the most delectable we had ever had at any home-stay. We had specially requested a typical/traditional Keralan 'sadya' for dinner and the hostess prepared a most delicious dinner for us! It was a unique experience in itself! The 'payasam' (dessert) was to die for!
Breakfast the next day was a mix of the Continental cereal, milk, jam, butter, toast, fresh fruit, fruit juice, eggs made to order, besides the usual tea/coffee); and south Indian we requested (idlis, masala dosas, 'podi' or powder to go along with the idlis and dosas, (very delicious) sambhar, coconut (besides others), pickles, inc. the delectable mango pickle, etc.
No special request -at meal time or otherwise- was beyond the wonderful hostess and her genteel husband (he showed us around the house, incl. getting my son's quota of his usual daily morning newspaper!). He's a thorough gentleman.
Nothing that the guest requests is too much of a task, or a trouble for them. In fact, they go out of the way to please their guests! All in all, it was a very pleasant experience for us (would rate it a perfect 10/10), even if as a transit stay - while on our way to Wayanad. I would strongly recommend it to anyone planning on, or looking for a very comfortable and pleasant home-stay experience while holidaying in/around (or transiting thru') Calicut (Kozhikode).
We,my wife and I, stayed in Kadavu Resorts, for 3 nights from 3rd to 6th Novmber 2010. Our stay was quite an enjoyable one. We chose to visit Kadavu Resorts during this Diwali festival days to avoid the noise and atmosphoric pollution in Bangalore where we live. We were glad this was very much achieved at this Resort. We celebrated Diwali, sans the noise and pollution, with better Dinner arranged at the Resort. The accommodation was very comfortable and the room overlooking the River Chaliar was very picturesque. It was quite invigorating to wake up to the beautiful view of the river and the coconutgrove across. The service here in as departments were excellant and most courteous. Undoutedly our stay at Kadavu Resort was the most memorable, so far.
Best Experience: During our stay, we had cruise in the Kettuvellam(Boat),which included a stay overnight in the Boat.It was a nice experience. The event was well organised ,starting with High-Tea, Cruise for about 3 hours and Dinner thereafter. The stay in the Kettuvellam concluded with , with break-fast while cruising next day for about 2 hours. In the course of the cruise, we had the pleasure of seeing the picturesque sceneries on both directions and banks of the river, with beautiful bungalows, and gardens. The Cruise was made most memorable by the very courteous service of the the two captains who steered the boat. Their commentary of the places we went through was quite informative. We will be failing if we do not appreciate the care taken for servining ecellant food while we were on the Kettuvellam. During our stay in the Resort, my wife made use of their Ayurveda Center for a session in Ayurvedic face pack. She said it was very invigorating and different from the facial treatments elsewhere.
Worst Experience: We did not have even a single bad experience during our stay.
