I stay in Bangalore. During my kid's Dasahara holidays i wanted to take my family to sea beach. My plan was to visit Chennai beaches and Mahabalipuram beaches. I decided to go to Mahabalipuram first and return through Chennai. My budget was not very high but reasonable. I booked TTDC hotel ( Hotel Tamilnadu ) in Mahabalipuram. This Hotel is located on ECR road and you will find it around 1 k.m. before entering Mahabalipuram ( if you are coming from Chennai ).
Hotel Tamilnadu Double AC room costs Rs. 2500 and Rs. 500 for any additional person ( They provide bed to be used on the floor and no extra cot ). They give complimentary breakfast ( it was unlimited and very nice. I almost had my lunch ). Lunch and Dinner, you need to buy from restaurant inside. Prices of food was reasonable and quality was good. Room was very clean. All the rooms there were sea facing and have separate balcony. They have their own beach. Sea view is good from all the rooms. Ground floor has ease to go out immediately to the beach and first floor is having good view due to little extra height. Both are equally good based on what you need. They have a very good swimming pool and also a non-smoking bar. You can take your drink out and smoke if you are a smoker. I was tempted to change my room to Deluxe room ( for no reason and only thinking that it might be better without seeing my room ) but it was not available. They have just one Deluxe room and that is also almost same as Double A.C. You can see Shore-temple from the hotel beach which is almost next to the hotel ( not walking though ). Hotel staff was very helpful and they also provided me map which i can use to visit places. There is a coffee shop just opposite to the hotel. Have a cup of coffee there once. it will be good. They provide room service but charge 10% of food bill ( which is reasonable ). Just to give you estimate i spent around Rs. 350 for one time food ( Me, my wife, and 2 kids )
I went to see the sea and saw it throughout morning-afternoon-evening) from the room itself. If you are going to Mahabalipuram, just book the room there and do not worry about the cost. I faced only one issue there that was for getting tea in the evening. They do not provide tea after 7:00 p.m. in the evening but hotel staff was helpful to point me to the coffee shop just outside which was another good experience.
It was very peaceful in the night and only sound we could hear was from Sea :-). Carry the shampoo because hotel does not provide that but they provide soap bar.
Because of our experience in some of the hotels in the past, i was carrying one big blanket, bed sheets, 2 air pillows and some extra items in my car. It was not needed and came back without me opening the packing :-)
I am very happy with my trip. It was better that i had expected. I am fully satisfied.
If you are going to Mahabalipuram, i will strongly recommend this hotel.
This is my second visit to this resort. The resort is very well maintained (in spite of the Tsunami in 2004) and all the cottages have very good facilities. The house keeping is excellent. The bathrooms even in the standard cottages are done-up very well and maintained well. All rooms have the latest flat screen TV and a minibar. The service is discreet , very friendly and quite prompt. The leisure activities are minimal, but the atmosphere here is to relax and unwind. The swimming pool is very well maintained and the there is an abundant supply of beach towels. There is also a well maintained tennis court for those active types. There is a restaurant attached to the swimming pool where the prices are rather exhorbitant. The main restaurant (partly open air which in summer can be pretty hot) has a nice resort ambience and the staff are friendly and helpful. The menu is rather short and runs more towards non-vegetarians, but many dishes are available on order that may not be listed in the menu. Prices are a bit on the higher side for certain types of dishes. The quality and taste are good and portions are standard. Overall I would rate it as good value for money. The resort also has other standard facilities like travel desk, internet browsing centre, massage, shopping etc.
Best Experience: Most of the staff are very friendly and accomodative to requests. Check-in was a breeze and done in a very friendly and welcoming manner. The place has an abundance of greenary which to the city folks is a welcome balm.
Worst Experience: While some foreigners were allowed to enter the pool without proper swinwear, some of the Indian guests were asked to refrain from using the pool without the swimwear. The menu should also be updated.
The only saving grace for this resort is its location. They have the worst service, an arrogant and rude staff, incompetent people working for them. We had gone over a long weekend and as expected there were huge crowds present and people had been waiting for almost 2 hours to get their room keys. Same happened with us, we waited for almost 2 hours to get into our 'suite'. After hours of waiting on empty stomach, as it was lunch time we finally reached our suite which was not worth the 10000 we paid per night at all.
The room was hardly a suite. The shower in the bathroom was broken and you had to hold the knob coz it would go off at any moment. When we complained about the same, the guy who came in said laughing, yes madam it's broken. Can't do anything about it.
Then came lunch. The restaurant shuts down at 3 and as we had been waiting for the room keys for the past 2 hrs it was well past lunchtime. Not a big deal we ordered food from their 24hr menu and they took another 2 hrs to get that food to us which was not worth the wait. It was spicy and cold and bad.
Finally we hit the beach which is the only good thing on this property. In the evening we decided to go to Taj for dinner which is hardly 9 km away. We asked the really polite female, Ms. Gowthami at the reception to call us the hotel cab and what she told us was outrageous. She said that the driver will charge Rs. 1500 for a mere 9 km. Plus the women was so rude.
Talk about hospitality! We had to eat the hotels shitty dinner and cold gulab jamuns which the restaurant staff had no idea how to heat up! We checked out the following morning itself.
My advice to fellow travellers that even if you have to go there don't go on long weekends as they don't know how to handle huge crowds. Try and get a booking at the Taj Restaurant and have your dinner there. Go to Mahabalipuram for some sightseeing and lunch there. You can find amazing seafood in Mahabs at this place called Moonrakers.
To put it in short, we were thrilled to be pampered. The room was luxury at the rate provided - including the ac, the plush bed and the room corner mini-bar refrigerator! Room service was excellent, the front desk was extremely cooperative, and the overall service was smilingly delivered. Food was delicious, though a few dishes were a shade spicy to our taste, but that may be entirely personal preference.
Best Experience: (1) Prompt extension by a day-in-advance over our prior booking at extremely short notice. (2) Crystal clean water in the roof-top pool! (3) Buffet breakfast was so sumptuous that we were full to the brim! (4) Extremely cheerful and prompt room-service. (5) Clean, healthy toilet.
Worst Experience: None at all! Only we suggest that they increase the options of authentic local vegetarian dishes for lunch and dinner!
Excellent destination for any special occasion in your life! I had to mull over different destinations before rounding off on Chennai and this beach resort and my choice did not let me down! I could recollect most of my memorable sea side childhood days at this resort. The private beach area had given secured feeling that we (along with wife and younger kids) could roam on the beach almost whole night. Children enjoyed the play area with cool breeze coming from Sea.
Best Experience: Playing in the sand, cool breeze from Sea, Sea side restaurant and well maintained premises and rooms. Excellent staff and room service.
Worst Experience: In general, it was none! However, we felt that the dinner could have been much better; the chef may not have been in good mood to prepare vegetarian items when everyone else is ordering the restaurant special sea food and non-veg items ;)
