This was my first long drive in my new car (Hyundai EON) with my family. Left from Bangalore at 6 am and due to lot of breaks during the journey, reached ECR road around 4 pm. Mahabalipuram is also called as Mamallapuram. The real difficulty started when no locals were in a position to speak Hindi or English. And none were aware where the Beach resort actually is, and the landmark - Crocodile bank, none were aware of this.
On ECR road we found several beach resorts (Ideal beach resort being the first one), but even after travelling 8-10 km, did not find this. Finally saw a board on our left which read "Blue Bay". Took left and found there is no beach resort there but there was one - "Odor resort". We called Blue Bay Chennai Office (Since that was the contact number mentioned on their website), and for our shock, the lady on phone openly said, "I do not know where the resort exists"! For a min we thought this resort is actually fake and we are lost somewhere in Tamil Nadu. Called Office again and same lady answered, Blue Bay resort is just 1 km from Odor resort. We went inside 1 km from Odor resort just to find ourselves lost in a farm land without any sign of a human being living there. After a long 10 drives from Bangalore, with a 10 months old kid in my car, we were really struggling to find this resort on ECR road since the lady on phone openly saying "I do not know where crocodile bank exists".
After 20 mins of begging her to help us find this resort, she gave her manager's phone number, his name is John. This guy was really helpful to guide us to resort. In fact, the first board which we saw "Blue Bay", was not at all a beach resort!!! It was a residential complex, manager mentioned and said the real Blue Bay beach resort exists 10 km away from Odor resort (Huh).
Again we came back to ECR road and finally found the "Blue Bay beach resort" next to Crocodile bank. You will find this on your right hand side if you are travelling from Mamallapuram to ECR road. DO NOT GET CONFUSED BY THE FIRST BOARD - "Blue Bay". You need to travel 10 km further to reach the actual resort. 1. 5 hours were wasted on ECR road to find this resort and the non cooperation from the Chennai office executive. We finally checked around 5 pm and here is how the resort looked like.
Front office people (in this resort, not Chennai office) were really helpful. They helped us check-in smoothly, carried all our luggage till cottage. Room was pretty good. The beach was very cleanly maintained as the restaurant. Food was really awesome, we enjoyed the evening snacks at beach side restaurant and it was very pleasant. Thanks to John for taking care of room service. You can either have your food and drinks in restaurant or they will send it to your cottage. If I exclude the initial difficulties and struggle to reach the resort, once we reach here, everything is good. We can easily go with Family and spend a good time. We stayed here for a night and then went to Pondy. Once again, thanks to John for helping us and thanks to staff for good service. The only request I would like to tell the management is put some proper sign boards to reach your resort. Thanks!
I stay in Bangalore. During my kid's Dasahara holidays i wanted to take my family to sea beach. My plan was to visit Chennai beaches and Mahabalipuram beaches. I decided to go to Mahabalipuram first and return through Chennai. My budget was not very high but reasonable. I booked TTDC hotel ( Hotel Tamilnadu ) in Mahabalipuram. This Hotel is located on ECR road and you will find it around 1 k.m. before entering Mahabalipuram ( if you are coming from Chennai ).
Hotel Tamilnadu Double AC room costs Rs. 2500 and Rs. 500 for any additional person ( They provide bed to be used on the floor and no extra cot ). They give complimentary breakfast ( it was unlimited and very nice. I almost had my lunch ). Lunch and Dinner, you need to buy from restaurant inside. Prices of food was reasonable and quality was good. Room was very clean. All the rooms there were sea facing and have separate balcony. They have their own beach. Sea view is good from all the rooms. Ground floor has ease to go out immediately to the beach and first floor is having good view due to little extra height. Both are equally good based on what you need. They have a very good swimming pool and also a non-smoking bar. You can take your drink out and smoke if you are a smoker. I was tempted to change my room to Deluxe room ( for no reason and only thinking that it might be better without seeing my room ) but it was not available. They have just one Deluxe room and that is also almost same as Double A.C. You can see Shore-temple from the hotel beach which is almost next to the hotel ( not walking though ). Hotel staff was very helpful and they also provided me map which i can use to visit places. There is a coffee shop just opposite to the hotel. Have a cup of coffee there once. it will be good. They provide room service but charge 10% of food bill ( which is reasonable ). Just to give you estimate i spent around Rs. 350 for one time food ( Me, my wife, and 2 kids )
I went to see the sea and saw it throughout morning-afternoon-evening) from the room itself. If you are going to Mahabalipuram, just book the room there and do not worry about the cost. I faced only one issue there that was for getting tea in the evening. They do not provide tea after 7:00 p.m. in the evening but hotel staff was helpful to point me to the coffee shop just outside which was another good experience.
It was very peaceful in the night and only sound we could hear was from Sea :-). Carry the shampoo because hotel does not provide that but they provide soap bar.
Because of our experience in some of the hotels in the past, i was carrying one big blanket, bed sheets, 2 air pillows and some extra items in my car. It was not needed and came back without me opening the packing :-)
I am very happy with my trip. It was better that i had expected. I am fully satisfied.
If you are going to Mahabalipuram, i will strongly recommend this hotel.
This is my second visit to this resort. The resort is very well maintained (in spite of the Tsunami in 2004) and all the cottages have very good facilities. The house keeping is excellent. The bathrooms even in the standard cottages are done-up very well and maintained well. All rooms have the latest flat screen TV and a minibar. The service is discreet , very friendly and quite prompt. The leisure activities are minimal, but the atmosphere here is to relax and unwind. The swimming pool is very well maintained and the there is an abundant supply of beach towels. There is also a well maintained tennis court for those active types. There is a restaurant attached to the swimming pool where the prices are rather exhorbitant. The main restaurant (partly open air which in summer can be pretty hot) has a nice resort ambience and the staff are friendly and helpful. The menu is rather short and runs more towards non-vegetarians, but many dishes are available on order that may not be listed in the menu. Prices are a bit on the higher side for certain types of dishes. The quality and taste are good and portions are standard. Overall I would rate it as good value for money. The resort also has other standard facilities like travel desk, internet browsing centre, massage, shopping etc.
Best Experience: Most of the staff are very friendly and accomodative to requests. Check-in was a breeze and done in a very friendly and welcoming manner. The place has an abundance of greenary which to the city folks is a welcome balm.
Worst Experience: While some foreigners were allowed to enter the pool without proper swinwear, some of the Indian guests were asked to refrain from using the pool without the swimwear. The menu should also be updated.
Positives : Resort in prime area. Just next to Mahabalipuram beach shore. Rooms were spacious with basic amenities. Little older but OK if you consider value for money. Swimming areas were excellent. Kids were able to get in pool and enjoy. Service person at swimming area and lawn were too good and prompt in their service like providing cushion beds, etc. Our service person Abdullah was good to be mentioned. I never saw him idle throughout my trip. He was providing all check-in and checkout assistance for the entire resort but we need more Abdullah there for the big resort.
Improvement area :
Food taste was good but their service tested my patience. Ordered lunch through room service at 2 pm got it around 3:45 pm after repeated escalations. Next day went to restaurant directly and ordered coffee, which they took more than an hour to provide. They are definitely running short of service folks there to run the show on a full house day. Also, it would be much better if they could provide more indoor games to their facilities list which is minimal now.
Despite these, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there in Sea Breeze Resort and would love to come back if the improvement areas are addressed.
