Writing a thoughtful review that encapsulates in words a physical experience is a really difficult assignment, and yet your invitation to write this review is an exciting challenge.
My review is about the hotel chain, "Ginger". Being a marketing professional and wild life admirer, travel is part and parcel of my life and career. Three decades of travel have taken me to exotic star hotels to make-shift places for a night's rest. Modern technology provides ample information on the net to hunt and select a place of interest and yet this information is misleading at times making it a challenge to find the right information.
Last week on business trip I had an opportunity to visit Goa, a place everyone aspires to visit, to admire the palatial churches, immaculate clean picturesque beaches, sea food, liquor and of course the great Goan culture.
When the opportunity knocked to visit Goa, with out a wink I booked a hotel room with Ginger Chain of Hotels. The reason for the selection was my earlier positive experiences with Ginger at Trivandarum, Indore and Agartala. However, Ginger Goa was a first time visit for me. The feeling was good as Ginger operates on standard operational guide lines and this relieves the anxiety of the first time traveler. What to expect and what not to expect with a standard chain of hotels, is well defined.
Despite these set expectation, my stay at Ginger Goa was a great experience by itself and full of surprises. We arrived by car when we realized that my foot was bleeding from a leech bite, something I noticed while walking to porch of the hotel. The security staff at the entrance, ran inside to fetch a first aid kit and rushed the office staff to my aid. I was moved as it was without a request from me. The office staff arranged a vehicle and fixed an appointment with the doctor. I later thanked security person Mr Surdas and Ms Suvrana. Such a welcome and reception demonstrate the non mechanical aspects of running a hotel that is supposedly a "chain", something that is supposed to be standard. It was the culture of showing concern towards guest from the bottom of the heart that moved me. The staff at Ginger exhibits real warmth, and the atmosphere encourages one to visit over and over again.
After this initial adventure, I was made to feel very homely when I finally checked in. The primary reason is the anxiety as to how the hotel property would be disappeared, as the interior, color choice, service levels, what to expect and what not to expect was right in front of my eyes, and were not just a photo on a website.
The hotel is furnished with a decent in-house restaurant named AULI - "As U Like It". One can expect decent vegetarian and non vegetarian food which is simple and nice. The bar is not attached. All my stays with Ginger, has provided for complementary breakfast, which is very simple and which fulfills a basic need when you are on the job and one cannot eat too much. The hotel is also fully smoke free. The cleaning staff are seen at work which results in mirror polished floors.
The hotel also provides ample parking space, a travel desk to take care of your travel needs and a small curio shop. One can enjoy the Tata SKY in the room or workout in the gym on the ground floor. You can also conduct more serious business as the hotel provides a conference room for meetings. Cafe Coffee Day can serve you with Cappuccinos all day long.
One can expect a good feeling of returning to home after a hectic days work or pleasure when you stay at Ginger. I have no hesitation to recommend the same.
Panjim Inn is housed in two buildings. One a century old building and the other relatively later. Both the buildings are well maintained. I was allotted a room in older building. Room was albeit small (single occupancy) but had period furniture right from poster beds to cupboards, desks and chairs. Doors and windows were also of same age and having the antique closing locking arrangements except for modern lock. Only the A/c, lights and refrigerator was modern. They should also consider antique (or antique like) switch buttons to complete the heritage look. The furnishing were upmarket and sleep quality was excellent. Bath was large and had sufficient toiletries provided . . Overall the stay as memorable one. I also saw some bigger rooms which were similar and comfortable for more people. Also the rooms in other building are large with period furniture and modern amenities. However my personal feeling is for the older building where you get to that feeling of yesteryear. The seating area between the rooms was ample and similarly furnished. The Verandah restaurant provided some good Goan cuisine and it was spicy (as instructed) to cater to Indian taste buds. The morning breakfast should have more options, especially since the hotel was full and buffet crowded. WiFi was fast and was for multiple devices. Service both in restaurant and rooms was good and mannered. Reception was prompt for both checkin & checkout and also provided me with tour of the hotel and their other properties in vicinity. Overall it was a good and memorable stay. Definitely will visit again
Good location, close by to happening place of Panjim.
Corridor and rooms were little smelly. Staff was very helpful and helped us move into better room. Thanks to the staff team.
Dining area was too crowded, could be bigger (Hotel was sold out, so I guess regular day this would not be an issue).
On our checkout day, we had requested for packed Breakfast instead of we dining in Dining hall, as we had to leave early, there was lots of resistance but finally they helped. Hope the food management team, becomes more customer oriented.
Overall felt that we could have got more value for our money.
Located at Panjim, two minutes walk to Miramar beach and a 30 minutes drive to beaches of North and South Goa I found this property's location actually better than others for me. I am not a big fan of staying in North Goa considering the traffic, the rush and bad roads at Baga. I always have my car with me. The drive to North and South is nice from Panjim. Do Mar as a hotel is corporate traveller friendly.
Room was super clean and breakfast very good. Balcony super spacious and nice to sit in the mornings or evenings. Staff is polite and efficient. Miramar beach being 2 minutes away is not a big deal since it's a boring beach. But I like running on the beach in the morning and for that this beach is great. The hotel itself has zero indoor activities. For the tariff the hotel charged on deals and for the short drives everywhere, I found it an incredible bang for the buck. Without a vehicle I would recommend staying where you are gonna be north or south. If you plan to explore or prefer staying in a nice and quiet clean place, go for it. I will stay there again.
Good for the first timers. Can get some UP food unlike the rest of Goa. Goa is very Tough for Veggie
Hotel was in the central part of Panjim city. A city of 9-10 sq km approx. Usually what we call an Area in our large towns like Lucknow or Kanpur. Do not take any Taxis / Rickshaws - everything in Panaji is Walkable. Taxi may take 5 minutes. Walking will take 6. Thats It! Collaboration with Shere-Punjab is additional benefit. Food quality is excellent. But just that - a bit of fish in almost everything. Not done purposely. Goa is about fish. But there are some great (not good) vegetarian restaurents in Panjim - Kamaths, Shiv Sagar and Some more. If you want to have a fish-free feel in Panjim, only go to the Veg restaurants. This hotel is excellent in services. Staff is very friendly. Its the best place to see the Panjim Church, Visit Miranda Mario gallery, eat at Moti Mahala. Or catch a bus from Panjim Bus Depot. Hotel restaurant is very spacious and extremely ambient. Morning free breakfast is excellent. Sumptuous and of good quality. Extra cup of tea is given on politely requesting. But (for the Northerners) ie. UP, Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab etc - strictly - Winter Months - October to Feb is only recommended. But yes season here is very expensive. Go in the adjoining months ... You still will have something to explore. A three day trip for a UP vegetarian is recommended. Street Night Food of Panjim is 5 star. What Mussoorie is to Delhi, Goa is to Mumbai. Take care. Do visit ... But try for a Travel Agent to guide you. Goa can be very pressing too. One last thing - A lot many Hotel marketing Touts may befool you into Lucky Draw techniques etc. On you - But just that they will eat on around 3-4 hours of you. But they will also give you a free ride to some good beach. So getting cheated in Goa is extremely rewarding. Goans as people are Great Friends, Very Professional, Very Christian. Goa is a good place. The hotel has to be.
