We stayed at Hotel Chunda Palace from 18th September, 2015 to 21st September, 2015 and the experience was nothing less than a Royal treatment!
Hotel Chunda Palace is built and owned by a Royal family who stay at the third floor and all other rooms are open for tourists. This property is around 27 kms from Maharana Pratap airport, which is around 45 minutes ride. You would get breath taking views from the hotel terrace of Oberoi Udaivillas (just a boundary apart) & Lake Pichola, whixh would leave you totally mesmerized.
We had booked a Palace room, but Hotel Chunda Palace upgraded us to their luxurious Historical Suite (Room No. 307), as a special gesture. The Historical Suite leaves you speechless the moment you enter it and makes you feel like King and Queen. Exceptional art work on walls and roof, furniture give you true flavor of Rajasthani art and royalty. All rooms in Hotel Chunda Palace have bath tubs fitted with jacuzzi and all toiletries are up to the mark. Room service and cleanliness is exceptional. Special mention of Devendra Singh, Deepak Bansal and Chuni Lal ji at the Royal Cuisine restaurant, who are always on there toes to provide you with best in class service.
We had opted for Breakfast and Lunch/Dinner inclusive plan, which was one of the best decisions. After a Continental and India breakfast at the hotel you can go for Udaipur sightseeing and get back to the hotel for your dinner. Master Chef Biplab Biswas is your best friend at Royal Cuisine restaurant. He was the one who took special care of all our requests and treated us with lip smacking vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes.
Overall, a complete luxurious, royal and memorable experience at Hotel Chunda Palace!
The owner of the hotel Mr. Ajay is descendant of a noble family. Himself well supported by his wife, has established this hotel in property the other half being his residence. Their motto : make guest feel as if they are guests at their home and give them a homely feeling. This hospitality motto has been rightly percolated in each and every crew member of the hotel. The hotel offers very good haveli type ambience having suitable sitting arrangements in lounges, garden and near swimming pool.
There is small parking. However since most of the guests were NRI or long distant, it is ample enough. Every corners of the hotel is nicely decked with statues, old-classical vessels etc giving ambience a royal touch. The swimming pool is well maintained. There 22 rooms which are uniquely decorated giving a feel of noble Rajasthan(mewar) life style. No 2 rooms are like each other.
Particularly our room was well decorated with old style lamp shades offering effective lighting, hand-made ceiling design, old style wooden cupboard offering heritage feeling well matched with write up desk. The bed was quite comfortable and well dressed up with proper bedsheet cover. The quilt and a electric heater which soothed us the 3 degree C, temp when we were at Udaipur.
The 'jarokha' inside the room gave us a royal sit out mood, enjoying a good cup of coffee. The tea-coffee maker was a complimentary and well stocked with flavours of tea/coffee, whitener, sugar. The toiletries were also quite good, The house keeping was quite excellent. The restaurant offers tasty cuisine though very limited. The breakfast served was very sumptuous offering Indian snacks like Allo-paratha, Puri-Subji, Poha, Pakoras. Bread along with 3 types of home made jams, butter. Milk with flakes- Corn, Wheat, Muesli, Chocos. Fresh fruit. And to gorge up with tea/coffee/fresh fruit.
An artist plays santoor during 7:30am to 10:30am making the breakfast more healthy and also our mood. The service offered is quite homely and prompt. The guys at the reception are quite enthusiast to help and guide the guest for tour plan and a comfortable stay. Over all the stay at Hotel Mahendra Prakash was more like a home stay.
Trident hotel, Udaipur is a beautifully well maintained, clean and green property situated right next to Udaivilas. We were welcomed by a traditional aarti and sweet fragrance in the attractive lobby. The hotel also arranged for a complementary show around trip to Udaivilas hotel, the beauty and memory of which makes one speechless. We chose a garden view room which made us feel secure, relaxed and comfortable in the lap of nature with all the modern comforts. We have stayed in 5-star hotels overseas too. But what makes Trident Udaipur a class apart is the prompt and soothing service of the staff. What impressed and touched us most is that they are loyal to Trident at the same time serve their guests with their heart into it. I can name Anoop at the reception, Kudrat, who offered us a room of our choice, Mahima and Siddharth (who obliged us with custom made Rajasthani Kadhi pakodi well prepared for us by the Chef) at the Aravalli restaurant. Sourabh reminded me of Florence Nightingale, as he swiftly and smoothly served all the guests with a smile. On the day of our check-out, when I told him that I will always remember him, he requested me to post my positive review about Trident on the Trip Advisor. So, this is for Saurabh in particular. Trident, Udaipur is more than a home away from home. Thanks Trident for the soothing and cherishable moments!!
Room Tip: It's better to choose garden view rooms with a beautiful view rather than the pool side one.
I arrived at the hotel with my wife and daughter directly from the airport and did not look out for anything extraordinary. Hence pleasantly surprised at the traditional welcome at the reception desk in the late afternoon. For good measure, one lady was from Meghalaya. Nobody here spoke in false English accent. Since our room was not yet ready, we went up to the top floor restaurant to pass the time, and fell in love with the place. Lake Pichola and the Aravali hills bordering it aws shimmering in the late afternoon winter sun, just across. We sat in one of the outdoor canopied porticoes for a refreshing lassi and were loath to go down to our room when it was declared ready. To our surprise the room and bathroom were really worth the trouble of leaving the terrace. Beautifully painted walls, ceiling and the lavish bathroom. I have rarely experience a bathroom with two wash basins, a welcome luxury. After we visited the City Palace we realized the hotel owners had modeled the interiors on the motif, design, colour, brocades, mirror work and furniture of the City Palace. That night we felt as if we were in the Palace itself. The outdoor swimming pool on the terrace and the indoor swimming pool on the first floor would be really tempting in summer. The art masters at a local art gallery certified that the artists who had worked at the hotel were also masters of their work. The dinner experience was memorable largely because of the helpful tips by the steward in choosing the best local cuisine served at the place. We have not tasted better Laval Maas or Maas Thali anywhere else in Rajasthan. The buffet breakfasts had very good variety to suit every taste of India and Europe. The fruit selection and confectionery was the best among all the hotels we stayed in Rajasthan. The stewards were attentive and swift. Live santoor recital during breakfast was also a novelty. Visitors should however not miss the lighted hotel edifice at night from a kilometer away. It looks like a huge Chinese lantern.
Kankarwa Haveli is probably the best low budget hotel on the banks of the Lake Pichola. This is a old haveli now converted into a hotel run by the family, which stays in the haveli premises. The room fuses a typical old world haveli charm with modern amenities (AC, tub + shower bath). People finicky about cleanliness will be really pleased with the spick-and-span room and the clean white bathrooms. There is no TV in the rooms which is a great plus point on a vacation (atleast for honeymooners ;) ).
A feature (typical of Rajasthan) common to all rooms is the decorated window, called jharokha. In the lake facing rooms, these bedded jharokhas give a wonderful view of the lake. Being on the eastern banks of the lake, it provides a view of a vast area of the lake. By the night, the Taj Lake Palace looks beautiful with its reflection in the serene waters of the lake (Note that hotels on the wetsren banks of the lake do nto give a good view of the Taj Lake Palace). One downside to all this is the smell of the water near the banks and the sight of people taking a dip in the waters in the early morning (I must say the jharokha gives you a complete picture of India ;) ). But the view of the lake is simply breathtaking to compensate for these.
The food in Kankarwa Haveli is not great and is quite expensive. The arrangement is on the terrace with umbrella shaded tables with a stunning view of the lake and the Aravalli hills beyond. They claim to serve Rajasthani fare, but in my opinion, you get better meals in other restaurants (I recommend Apni Dhani in Udaipur for extremely delicious lip-smacking Rajasthani meals). You would rather use the terrace to simply sit and watch the lake under the moonlit sky and stars by the night and enjoy the cool breeze. Cold-drinks, mineral water etc at the hotel is expensive.
The house-keeping staff is courteous and prompt. However, the owner is quite rude. You can see that he is more interested in entertaining his foreigner guests rather than waste his time on the Indian guests. We had some issues with our bill (extra items charged to our bill) and he was extremely rude when we asked him to check and correct. We suggest you ignore him and enjoy the room.
Kankarwa Haveli is more of a hotel suitable for night stay while you spend the day sightseeing. So, there are no activities it has to offer. Though, it has a decent collection of books. You can simply pick up a book, curl up in your jharokha and read with a good view of the lake. Though the hotel does not have many activities to keep you occupied, Udaipur in itself with its beautiful lakes has a lot to offer for vacationers and honeymooners.
Kankarwa Haveli is located right in the market area. As soon as you step out of the hotel, you enter the small bylanes of Udaipur where you can literally spend hours shopping for anything Rajasthani - dresses, sarees, purses, paintings, jewellery and what not. Even if you are not interested in particularly buying anything, it is a pleasure to simply walk around browsing through the colorful articles that the local people have on display.
Best Experience: The best part about the hotel\'s lake-facing rooms is the jharokha with a fabulous view of the lake and the terrace. We recommend taking a lake-facing room. We stayed in Room 206 which provided a wonderful view. Perfect place for honeymooners.
Worst Experience: Speaking to the owner was a nasty experience but not necessarily the case if your bill looks perfect to you ;)
