- Pathetic experience with Hotel Management
- by Adwitee Dey for Jungle Retreat Wayanad
- Posted Sep 4, 2016
We booked a room with Jungle Retreat a month back on TravelGuru and paid the full price for two nights. It was one of the biggest mistakes I have made recently since I didn't expect to be treated the way we were. My husband hurt his leg the day before we were supposed to get there and could not walk. The cancellation policy said that we could lose almost all the money (You might be charged up to the full cost of stay (including taxes & service charge) if you do not check-in to the hotel) if we didn't cancel by Aug 4 for a September 3 travel so to be fair we should have been warned. What I didn't expect was the horrible attitude of Ms. Anju (Management of Jungle Retreat) whom we spoke to. Between getting my husband's leg attended to, we tried to call her and check if anything can be done to refund at least some money. I had low hopes but I have faced situations before where people have been at least cooperative in case of an emergency. A friend of mine had his full money refunded when he faced an emergency. The hotel staff ensured that they refunded the money in spite of the cancellation policy. But not Ms. Anju. She seemed concerned only with getting the money. Since the travel site had released the money to the resort she had the sole power and she used it by dismissing us and asking us to talk to the travel company and not to bother her. On top of that, she had a hard tone from the start and said things like. "You didn't call us when you booked so why are you calling us now? ". "If you had booked with us I could have done something". "I have told the travel company if I get a replacement booking then only I can do something". I admit that I may have appeared angry when I was talking to her but she made no attempt to understand that we were facing a real emergency. To that her reply was "I do not wish to have this unpleasant conversation with you". Glad they know what providing good service means. We didn't get any of our money back in the end, which I can still understand since we made the booking with the cancellation policy in place. But what didn't go down well with us was the way the Anju dismissed a valid case without even making an attempt to check the facts, while being very high handed about it. I am just sorry I lost money to a place that is run by people like her. What they seem to not be aware of that they may own/run a resort but people save for their vacations and even a little would have gone a long way. It may be a very beautiful place (not that I will ever go there after what happened) but our experience with the management was very ugly.
- Blooms - Hospitality at its best !

When we thought of taking a break from the busy life to Wayanad, there was only Blooms in our mind as many of my friends were appreciating their stay there recently Kenichira where Blooms is located, is on the Road (Sulathan Bathery - Manathody Road which runs with a deviation to the left from Beenachi junction). Ease of accessibility from the NH 212 is an added advantage of Blooms as it is just 16 Km from Sulthan Bathery. When we called up Blooms, Ms. Priya Annie Paul interacted with us and collected all the details for arranging a comfortable stay there. Ms Priya was literally online, giving us all the directions till we reached Blooms which is really appreciable We reached at the Blooms a bit late because of the holding up at the Muthanga Check post for about two hours. Priya was just waiting to receive us there and quickly allotted the rooms as we all were hungry The way we were welcomed to the Blooms, to the rooms and later to the dining area was enough to make us feel so homely and that we are at the perfectly right place. The rooms were well arranged with clean linens and all basic facilities. The dining area was nicely arranged and you will never feel unattended at any point of time as they all are very keen to express their hospitality which really lacks at many of the other prominent resorts The food they served to us it was awesome & I don't have words to express it. It was really exquisite with the special garnishing with their hospitality. They proved that food can be prepared so deliciously outside homes. Appreciate the Chefs Mr. Jose and Mr. Reji for treating our taste buds so appreciably After a short spell of rest, we had a round through the area which is well managed, neat and clean. The picturesque landscapes trees and water body will surely steal your sight When we came back, tea was ready for us and chairs arranged in the lawn for to sit after the us. We had a nice time in the lawn with songs from our children After a refreshing Bath, we were served with dinner which was again a super specialty. Taste is awesomely superb and more than that to mention was the way they serve and attend us. Mr. Rijin, Suneesh, Mahesh and all were super courteous With that quality dinner and hospitality, we could not afford to sit long after the dinner as we usually do, but retired to bed as early as possible Got up at 0600 Hrs and had a walk around the Blooms to see plenty of birds welcoming the rising sun. Mild fog all around added to the scenic beauty of the place Rani, the Blooms's lovely elephant came down to the lawn to get the routine jaggery and banana. She was so friendly and adorable, posed with all for photographs After a homely breakfast, we were ready at 0900 Hrs for a sightseeing trip of Wayanad. Priya explained with the map, the important nearby tourist places we can cover in one day After a tiresome journey, we were back to Blooms at 1900 Hrs. We had one more chance to taste the delicacies from Mr. Reji during dinner time Though all were tired after the whole day out we enjoyed the moments with pass-time games till midnight before retiring to bed This morning was very special as we have to start our retreat journey by 1030 Hrs. The breakfast was typical Kerala styled "Chiratta Puttu and kadala kari" tasting great. After the breakfast we had a full round of the farm with the help of their caretaker. We felt the unique cordial relationship between the man, animals and the nature there the elephant was looking so elegant and proud to pose with us for the photographs. We all loved the moments spend with her It was really sad that the moments passed so quickly and we have to return. Promising that we will be back soon for a longer spell, we started our return journey at 1100 Hrs There are no words to express the feeling we had there. The whole team of Blooms deserve the best of appreciations for the treat they offered us during our stay there No doubt that I will recommend all who wishes to have a peaceful stay at Wayanad, Blooms is your destiny, don't ever miss it .
- I am in love!

How can someone not fall in love with Kerala is just beyond me. If you ever go to Kerala, you must try jungle retreat Wayanad. 6 of us, all girls decided to take a break from our IT lives, we wanted to go somewhere remote, safe and very private. It is purely by coincidence that we found jungle retreat online. That was the best decision we ever made . Anju the young host is also from the IT world in Bangalore and hats off to her for taking a break from her IT life and pursuing her dreams. She treated us friends and it felt as though we have known her/them for years !. The location is amazing and though we are not very hardcore animal lovers, we still enjoyed the total peace and calmness of the forests where the resort was situated . The food was just awesome, the other staff was just so helpful and amazing . With the limited number of rooms they have and the policy of not taking noisy bachelors ensured that we had complete privacy !. We also talked to Anil, who is Anju's other half, the way he explains jungle stuff is just so captivating, he is one amazing story teller and we were soon transformed to kids listening to stories !!. One evening the heavens opened up and sitting in the balcony of our 2 bedroom villa, watching the rain fall across the grasslands, it felt that we were the only ones in God's green earth !. Truly special experience
- Experience the real wild life

We, my husband and I are hardcore wildlife enthusiasts and we have traveled the length and breadth of the country. We would say we are experienced travelers especially into the wild corners of India, but the few days spent in Jungle Retreat Wayanad was clearly something else. The rooms are cute and nice, above all very, very clean, no fancy, no luxury - that is not needed also. The food is plated meals with an unlimited serving of Indian delicacies, suited our taste perfectly. We are especially careful when we travel, we loved the simple, but tasty and fresh food served here supplemented by servings of fruits and salads What takes the prize is the location. It is surrounded by 3 national parks and we had amazing sightings right from the room we stayed in. Elephants, gaurs, wild dogs making a kill - it was unreal! We heard elephants splashing around in the watering hole in the night while we were in the bed, and we came out to the balcony and we could see a herd in the water enjoy a Bath under the full moon! Unreal There are 3 national parks near by, all within 30 minutes. We went for 3 safari drives - 1 in Wayanad wildlife sanctuary - elephants, 1 in Nagarahole - 1 Tiger, Gaur and 1 in Kabini - 1 Leopard My 2 cents would be, if you are a wildlife lover, look no further, go there - just go there! Do take camouflage clothes, walking shoes and a hat. They provide excellent guides who can take you for walks, you don't want to miss that either!
- A bitter experience, not worth what you spend

After Reading all the reviews about Jungle Retreat Wayanad, I decided to give it a try on the 15th and 16th of March. I opted for the two nights, three days package Fairly big property, right next to the main road. Jungle Retreat has several cottages and a watch tower. The surrounding area is not a jungle but civilized forest. Occasionally elephants do enter the farm in search of water and banana plantation. (This is the case with every property in Wayanad). The man made water hole was filled with garbage and not maintained at all. The rooms were clean and the food quality was good, however they use coconut oil while preparing the dishes Being a wildlife enthusiast and having traveled across India seeking wildlife and adventure, I had high hopes for this one. The safari is conducted in a big 10 seater noisy diesel jeep. The property owner Anil had promised me wildlife and had given me high hopes of Tiger and Leopard sightings during the night safari. He also mentioned there were several crossing points where one needs to wait for an hour to spot wildlife. Comforting and promising was his words, we started the safari around 11 pm in the night. The road used for the safari is the main road which connects Kutta to Thirunelli. This road has lots of buses and trucks which travel during the night time carrying timber and inter district passengers. The guides were a local jeep driver who is part time sales person in a super market along with the care taker Pramod, who was totally inexperienced in spotting wildlife. They drove us all the way till Thirunelli and again to Tholepetty and back to the resort. During the whole safari we only could spot Elephant, Gaur, a rabbit and some deer. These animals are an easy sighting to anyone who cross past these roads. We got back to the resort and shared our grievance with the owner Anil. He completely changed to what he promised initially and said wildlife spotting was quite rare these days We decided to try out the Nagarhole safari the next morning and left early around 5 am from the guest house. In Nagarhole, we did the normal safari in a bus and we spotted much more wildlife than what was promised by Jungle Retreat Wayanad. The government safari lasts around an hour and a half and they take you inside the Nagarhole forest. We were able to spot an old Tusker, Gaurs, Mouse Deer, Peacock, Sambar deer, Malabar squirrel and lots of spotted deer. We also met a family who had stayed in Jungle Retreat earlier and they also had a similar experience. They later shifted to a resort in Kabini. I checked with the caretaker Pramod, and he mentioned they spot a tiger twice a week. I again checked with their jeep driver who does the safaris and he mentioned he has worked there for 2 months and has not spotted a tiger or leopard till date. The information given on their website about their Wildlife spotting (they claim to see a certain number of Tigers, Leopards, Bears every week) is totally false information We asked owner to give us a discount to compensate our disappointment and he refused it straight away. We requested him to compensate by offering us a meal which was also refused Very expensive. He charged us INR 5, 300 for one night two days. ( We cut short our stay duration due to our bitter experience). If you are seeking a real wildlife experience then Jungle Retreat Wayanad is not the right place for you. You can opt for far better resorts in Kabini at a little additional cost. JR Wayanad Resort is meant for people who seek Leisure in a comfortable farm house. Do not visit this place with expectations of spotting a carnivore, you will end up with disappointment. No value and not worth the Tariff My two copper! Thanks for Reading and enjoy your Eco tourism. :-)
