| About Aberdare National Park |
Aberdare National Park is spread over an area of 767 square kilometres in the Aberdare Mountain Range. Established in 1950, this park is now managed by Kenya Wildlife Services. The park is a part of Aberdare that is an isolated volcanic region.
The park comprises an area known as the Aberdare Salient, towards the east. Sprawling over an area of 2,130 metres, the Aberdare Salient is situated near the Nyeri Town. Located at a distance of 160 km from Nairobi, this place attracts several tourists.
In 1952, Princess Elizabeth learnt about the death of her father and her ascension on the British throne at the treetops lodge in the Aberdare National Park. During the independence struggle of Kenya, this park served as the hideaway for a Mau Mau rebel.
Tourists need a smart card for entering the park, which can be obtained from the main gate. The charges for entry are different for citizens of Kenya. Travelling on foot is not permitted inside the park; hence, it is advisable to take a safari car.
The park has a miscellaneous ecosystem, which is home to giant alpine vegetation, bamboo forest, rainforests and moorlands. Growth of indigenous forests in the area is due to the red volcanic soil. The different species of flora and fauna is the major attraction of this park. From black rhinos to endangered species like forest hogs, different animal species inhabit the park.
The best time to visit Aberdare National Park is January to February and June to September as there are no heavy rainfalls during these months.
