About Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka for 14 centuries till 11th century AD. As capital, it was one of the most stable centres of political power and spiritual power in the country. Even now, this ancient city is surrounded by monasteries.
Historically, Anuradhapura is also significant in Hindu legend as the capital of the King Ravana in the Ramayana.
Anuradhapura is an ancient city, established in the 4th century BC, 206 km from Colombo in northern Sri Lanka and is currently the capital of North-Central province. It is famous for its well-preserved ruins of the thousand plus years of Lankan history and civilization.
The largest dagoba in Sri Lanka is found here.
Anuradhapura has several monuments of historical importance - the dagobas, the temple of the Bodhi tree as well as the remains from palaces, temples etc. The Bodhi tree here was grown from a cutting of the original tree under which Buddha found enlightenment more than 2500 years ago.
Anuradhapura was established as the royal capital by King Pandukabhaya in 380 BC and remained so for 119 successive Sinhalese kings till the year 1000 AD when it faced destruction by invaders and was finally abandoned in 1073 AD.
It is said that in the 2nd century BC, King Elara reigned supreme in northern Sri Lanka, with Anuradhapura as his capital, till he was defeated by Dutugemunu who ruled the southern part of the island. This was the first time that the island became a single kingdom and with active contributions from Dutugemunu, Buddhism also started flourishing here.
There are various temples and ancient structures to see here. Some of them are Ruwanveli Seya, The Mirisavati Dagoba and the Thuparama Temple. There are large lakes and other water reservoirs here where travellers can go for a walk. Cycling and hiking are also popular in Anuradhapura.
