| Mihintale |

Mihintale is a sacred mountain which lies 13 km from the city centre. It is believed that Buddhism started from this place. The stairway leading to the top of the mountain has 1840 steps made of granite. There are various temples and statues of Buddha to see here.
The mountain attracts a lot of pilgrims on the full moon day in the month of June which is known as the poya day.
