Anuradhapura is the ancient capital of the Sinhalese kings, an important Buddhist pilgrimage centre and famous for its extensive Buddhist ruins and the thousand plus years of history buried here.
It was the first kingdom to be established in Sri Lanka. There are various ancient structures to see in Anuradhapura.
The Jetavanaramaya dagoba in Anuradhapura is the largest dagoba in Sri Lanka and the highest brick structure in the world. Anuradhapura is also home to the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, also known as the sacred Bo tree, the oldest historical tree in the world that is 2300 years old. Other attractions here are the several stupas, a temple entirely hewn from rock and the Brazen Palace.
There are also the monasteries of Mahavira, Jetavana and Abhayagiri to see in Anuradhapura. Apart from sightseeing, Anuradhapura also has various large lakes and other water reservoirs. The area around the lakes is a popular picnic spot for tourists as well as locals. Walking by the lakes is another option for travellers here.
