Located in a temperate climatic zone, the weather of Austria is influenced by the Atlantic climate. The country experiences four distinct seasons -- spring, summer, autumn and winter. Owing to the West-East expanse and topographical diversity, the weather of Austria has three differentiating climatic regions namely East, Alpine regions and remainder of the country.
The months from June to August are regarded as the summer months, which are mostly accompanied by thunderstorms. In summer, the temperature recorded during the day is around 25° Celsius; however it can often reach up to 35° Celsius.
Winter months in the country are from December to March and often extend longer at higher altitudes. During the months of January and February, the winter is severe in entire Austria. When compared on the basis of region, winter in the lowlands is colder while in the Alpine region, winter is harsh.
Large temperature fluctuations can be seen all round the year in the Alpine region with nights being chilly even during high summer. On the other hand, when compared to the rest of the country, the northern Alps are wetter. The south-east region of the country comprising Carinthia and Styria is dry and sunny, while strong easterly winds are experienced by the areas located around Vienna.
The best time to visit Austria is throughout the year, which mainly depends on the type of activity tourists want to enjoy. For instance, the best time to enjoy winter sports is from November to April.
