The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is divided into 100 cents. Currency notes are available in denominations of LKR10/, LKR 20/, LKR 50/, LKR100/, LKR 200/, LKR 500/, LKR 1,000/ and LKR 2,000/. Denominations are clearly marked on either side of the notes and stated in Sinhala, Tamil and English.
Coins are found in denominations of 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents, 1 Rupee, 2 Rupees, 5 Rupees, and 10 Rupees.
All the major currencies, like US Dollar, Sterling Pound and Euros can be freely exchanged in Batticaloa. Indian Rupee (INR) is equivalent to approx 2.4 Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).
The exchange counters in the arrivals hall at the international airport are open 24X7. The exchange rates at the airport are generally the best with very little difference between the rates offered by various banks. ATMs are also available.
It is advisable to ask the banks or moneychangers for small denomination notes (LKR10, 20 and 50) as it may be difficult to get change for big value notes from small shops, tuk-tuks etc. Small shops/ food stalls usually accept cash only.
All foreign exchange transactions must be done through authorized banks or exchanges with the provision of an encashment receipt. Unauthorized foreign exchange transactions are illegal.
There are only a few ATMs in Batticaloa. It is advisable to carry a lot of cash since traveller’s cheques are also not accepted very easily.
Foreign currency can be exchanged at the Bandaranaike International Airport as well as banks, hotels and authorized exchanges in Colombo or Batticaloa.
Pan Asia Bank, Nations Trust Bank and Bank of Ceylon are few of the banks located in Batticaloa.
Like many other countries, in Sri Lanka too one can face problems like credit/debit card fraud.. However, such a problem does not exist in Batticaloa as the shops here generally accept cash.
