| Gal Oya National Park |
|
Gal Oya National Park is spread over an area of 260 sq km and is built around an artificial reservoir called the Senanayake Samudra. The reservoir was formed in the early 1950s by building a dam over the Gal Oya River. The park has three distinct types of vegetations namely the forest, the scrub and the grassland. It also houses more than 32 different mammals.
The elevation of the park varies from place to place, and it varies from 30 m to 900 m. There is also the Dighavapi stupa located within the park which is a pilgrimage centre for tourists. The park receives an annual rainfall of 1,700 mm and it rains almost throughout the year here.
