Tourists from all across the world head to the Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The historical and heritage sites in Cambodia include the Royal Palace at Phnom Penh. The Silver Pagoda of the Royal Palace is one of the central destinations within this city.
Tourists can also visit the National Museum of Arts, which has an abundance of sculptures, paintings and artefacts. Another important site within the city is Wat Phnom temple after which the place is named.
From this central location in the capital city, tourists can also visit other historical sites. Around 123 km away, the city of Kampong Cham offers an opportunity to experience the French colonial atmosphere. It is the second largest city in Cambodia and was known as 'The city of gardens' in the past. The port and the Wat Nokhor that date back to the 13th century AD are other attractions.
Siem Reap provides a platform for visiting the Angkor Wat that is one of the sought after destinations amongst international tourists. Angkor Wat is a historical site that is appreciated for its numerous temples that scatter across the old complex.
Apart from Angkor Wat, some of the other temples within the complex are Ta Prohm and Prah Khan. On the other hand, Siem Reap is also a gateway for taking a one day excursion that includes visits to the temple for Khmer pilgrims on top of a mountain located in Phnom Kulen.
The monuments of Sambo Prei Kuk that are located in the province of Kampong Thom also attract a lot of visitors. These belong to the 7th century AD and denote the capital of the Chenla Kingdom. Battambang is another city in Cambodia that can be used as a base for visiting the Anorian temples. The town of Kratie is known for its typical French and Khmer architectural style.
Tourists interested in wildlife can visit the Karakoram National Resort and Mondulkiri. The resort is known for housing several endangered species of animals like the tiger, gibbons and sun bears. Situated around 120 km away from the capital city of Phnom Penh, the Karakoram National Resort is easily accessible.
The city of Ratanakiri is known as the eco-tourism capital of Cambodia. It offers beautiful views of waterfalls, wildlife, jungles and scenery. This mountainous province is appreciated for its tribal lifestyle that can be experienced firsthand by visitors. The clear waters of the volcanic lake, Yeak Laom, are ideal for a swim.
Kratie is considered a home for freshwater dolphins. These dolphins can be found in the Mekong River, a short distance from the town of Kratie. Tourists can visit the floating villages in Tonle Sap near Siem Reap and watch the unique bird-life at the Preak Tuol National Park. The Kamping Poy Lake near Battambang provides opportunities for swimming.
Adventure enthusiasts can visit the seaside port of Sihanoukville which is known for its beaches. It is known for adventure activities like scuba diving and snorkelling. Island hopping can be done by taking a boat from the port. Numerous dirt bike trails are available in Angkor, Siem Reap and other parts of Cambodia.
Cambodia celebrates many festivals throughout the year. The Chinese New Year is celebrated in Phnom Penh by its substantial Chinese population in January and February.
The Khmer New Year in mid-April marks the decoration of temples across the country, which is accompanied with dancing, singing and playing in traditional style. May brings about the Royal Ploughing Day that is marked by celebrations in the National Museum in Phnom Penh.
The Water Festival in October or November coincides with the reversal in the flow of the Mekong River. The three day water festival is immensely popular with people from across the country. Other festivals include Pchum Ben (Festival of the Dead) in September, Independence Day on 9th of November and King Sihamoni's Birthday in May.
