| ANZAC 1916 - 1918 Memorial |
|
Also known as the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial and the Light Horse Memorial, the ANZAC 1916-1918 Memorial was the first memorial to be made on Anzac Parade. The Memorial honours the soldiers of the Australian Light Horse Brigade, the Imperial Camel Corps, the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and the Australian Flying Corps who lost their lives in Egypt, Syria and Palestine between 1916 and 1918.
The original memorial was built in Port Said, Egypt, that was destroyed by Egyptian nationalists during the 1956 Suez crisis. Ray Ewers OAM, a famous Melbourne sculptor created this Memorial.
The Memorial is made of cast bronze and is a self-supporting, symbolic sculpture standing on a granite base. It has two Australian Army horse riders wearing the uniform of World War I. The right side horse is injured or shot with the rider fallen on the ground while the other rider is supporting his companion.
