Many international car rental companies like Avis, Dollar, Sixt, Thrifty, Advantage, Alamo, Budget, Hertz, Europcar and National provide services in China.
Apart from the international rental agencies, China also has several domestic car hire companies like Cheyou, eHi, Guangzhou Long Yao Di and China Auto Rental. Most car rental agencies have their offices in major tourist areas of metropolitan cities like Hong Kong and Beijing. However, the maximum concentration of car rental agencies is found outside airports of Beijing, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, etc.
Car rental agencies in China offer a wide array of cars, including compact, mid-size, economy, full size, luxury and premium. Intermediate 4WD or AWD and mini vans are also available on rent from major rental companies. The types of cars available for hire consist of Audi, Passat, Buick, Santana, Honda, Citroen, Jinbei, Red Flag, Ford, Benz and Chevrolet, to name a few.
Most rental companies do not accept international driver’s licence. Cars cannot be rented, below 21 years. However, those between the age of 21 and 23 are required to pay an additional surcharge. The cost of renting a car in China usually varies from $12 to as high as $610, depending upon the type of vehicle, driver availability and time.
