Colombo Excursions & Tours

There are several excursions and tours available from Colombo. A very popular tour from Colombo is that to Sigiriya which is located 100 miles northeast of Colombo.

Sigiriya is an ancient fortress which was built by King Ksyapa in order to protect himself from the attacks of his brother. The fortress was built in the 14th century.  It is about 2-3 hours away from Colombo and can be reached by a car or a bus. It is open every day from 08:30 am to 6:00 pm.

A tour of the Kelaniya Temple from Colombo is another option. The temple is a Buddhist site and is about 7 miles from the city of Colombo. The temple is more than 2500 years old.

Another tour popular from Colombo is that to the city of Kandy. Kandy is 488 metres above sea level. It is located 75 miles from Colombo and is famous for having the tooth of the Buddha.

One can go from Colombo to Kandy by bus. The bus fare is approximately Rs 120. A guided tour of Kandy costs Rs 3,000.

Tours are also available to Negombo from Colombo. Negombo is 37 km from Colombo and is known as the fishing town of the city. It also has various churches and shopping streets to explore.
