Burj Khalifa is the tallest skyscraper in the world. Its construction began in September 2004 and was officially inaugurated on January 4, 2010.
It was to be named Burj Dubai before its opening, but as the project's completion date coincided with the global recession, the Dubai government had to seek a multi-billion dollar bailout from Abu Dhabi. To honour this crucial support, the structure was named after the UAE President, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
It comprises 160 floors and is 828 metres long, which is 300 metre taller than Taipei 101, the previous tallest structure in the world.
The 124th floor of Burj Khalifa has an observation deck that is known to be the highest in the world at 425 metres. Burj Khalifa includes a 12-hectare (30-acre) man-made lake, the Dubai Mall, at least 19 residential towers, 30,000 homes, nine hotels, 3 hectare (7.4 acres) parkland.
