Popular for its ancient civilisation and cultural heritage, Egypt is home to number of magnificent monuments and other historical attractions. More than ninety percent of popular Egyptian sites are lined up along the river Nile, as well as in Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.
Egypt is most famous for the Great Pyramids including Sphinx in Giza, which is the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World. Apart from this, tourists can take a tour to the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities and other ancient temples, tombs, mosques, churches and monuments in Cairo. Other reckoned sites outside Cairo include the ancient ruins of Karnak and Luxor temples, Valley of the Kings, Thebes and Memphis.
Abu Simbel is also an archaeological site famous for its massive rock temples. Towards Upper Egypt lies Aswan, which is home to several museums, monasteries, tombs, temple complexes and other historical sites.
The most impressive site amongst them in Aswan is the High Dam constructed across the river Nile. Islands in the vicinity of Aswan such as, Elephantine and Kitchener's are popular with tourists looking for a peaceful vacation.
Due to its natural setting, rich coral reefs and biblical history, Sinai has also become a popular tourist destination in Egypt. It is famous for Mount Sinai, which is considered to be one of the most spiritual places on Earth.
Saint Catherine's Monastery, the oldest working Christian monastery in the world, is located in Sinai. Hurghada, along the Red Sea is recognised for its beaches and surrounding areas, particularly El Gouna.
A small fishing village, known as Sharm el-Sheikh has also developed into a popular tourist resort in Red Sea. Alexandria is the main summer resort visited for its beaches, ancient sites and museums, especially the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Other attractions of Alexandria include Pompey's Pillar and the Roman Amphitheatre. Among other attractions of Egypt are the White Desert and River Nile.
