Gauteng Attractions

Gauteng is one of the most popular tourist destinations, which has something for everyone, be it monuments, museums, parks or restaurants and shopping places.

The Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden is a 300 hectare open space in Roodepoort, housing more than 600 species of naturally occurring plants. Cradle of Humankind is a world heritage site that has ancient remains of plants, animals and hominids.

Close to this site, one can go to the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve having more than 30 animal species, including buffalo, lion and white rhino. Johannesburg Zoo, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, Lory Park and Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve can also be visited to view the wildlife of Africa.

Right from mountain biking to cycling, caving and climbing, there are various activities for adventure lovers. Tourists can also opt for paragliding, sky diving and bungee jumping.

One can shop for traditional art & craft works, accessories, jewellery and other goods from malls, markets, shopping centres, curio shops and street sellers. Fourways, Cresta, and Northgate Malls are the prominent shopping spots.

Besides shopping destinations, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Sandton and other areas also house several restaurants. Johannesburg has various open-air restaurants, serving traditional food of different regions.

On the Noord Street Taxi Rank, one can find several hawkers lined up towards the direction of Twist Street. International fast-food chains including KFC, Nando's, Steers or King Pie have opened their franchise in the urban areas of Gauteng.

Lekgotla is an African-themed restaurant that tourists frequent regularly. Sandton and the Backroom, along with Moyo restaurant are also famous among tourists looking for different yet authentic cuisines.
