The Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary is named after the famous South African zoologist, Austin Roberts. Located in Muckleneuk, this bird sanctuary is a 45 minute drive from Johannesburg. It is a popular picnic spot.
This sanctuary is developed in 12 acres of wetland, which attracts diverse species of birds. Amongst these, the popular birds which can be seen here include blue crane and grey crowned crane birds, speckled pigeons, rock doves, and even the random Egyptian goose.
Tourists can also go to the popular Blue Crane Restaurant of Walkspruit Open System, located near the sanctuary.
Timing: 5 am – 6 pm (September to April)
7 am – 5 pm (May to August)
