In every city, the municipality owns certain bus services while others are managed by private operators. Metrobus is operated in Johannesburg by the municipal authorities.
Greyhound, Intercity and other bus service operators offer inter-city transport service. The Pretoria bus service is not that organised and its frequency as well as timing may differ from the schedule during rush hours. From the main city to the suburbs, a bus ride costs around 101.26 INR.
Taxis are available throughout the province, but the urban regions of main cities are better connected in comparison to suburbs. Tourists can take taxis right from the airport.
Taxis are also available near hotels, lodges and sightseeing spots.
The rates of the taxis vary with respect to time and distance travelled. In comparison to other public transport, hiring a cab or taxi is relatively costlier; therefore, it is better to negotiate and quote a price before starting the journey.
HeinRich's Taxis offer safe and professional taxi service throughout Gauteng province. Rixi Taxi is another name engaged in providing safe and professional taxi service to tourists. AA Taxis, Dial a Dove Taxi and SAcab also offer cars on rent.
Taxis can be hired from different taxi ranks or prominent spots like railway stations.
The Blue Train offers luxurious travelling through its express train between Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town. The trains between these major destinations offer sleeping compartments, the cost of which is included in the fare. For an overnight journey, it is advisable to make prior reservations.
Several local trains also connect the urban areas of Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg. In these trains, first and second-class coaches are available. Children less than two years old are allowed to travel free of charge, while children between 2 - 11 years of age need to pay half fare.
The high-speed rail link, Gautrain, has been constructed between Pretoria, Johannesburg and O.R. Tambo International Airport. The ticket purchased for Gautrain can be used for travelling in the Metro Rail as well.
The Shosholoza Meyl inter-city rail services connect Johannesburg to Pretoria and in between it passes through Musina via Polokwane and Komatipoort via Nelspruit. From Pretoria, Metro Rail commuter services connect Atteridgeville in the west and Soshanguve in the north.
