| About Great Barrier Reef |
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world and comprises of more than 2900 individual reefs and 900 islands that covers an area of 344,400 square kilometres. Situated in the coral seas beside the coast of Queensland towards the north-eastern side of Australia, this natural wonder is perhaps the biggest structure made by living creatures.
The Great Barrier Reef was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1981 and it can be seen from outer space. It has been built by billions of minute living things known as coral polyps.
The Great Barrier Reef has been in use for long by the Torres Strait Islander people and the Aboriginal Australians and has been an important symbol of spirituality and culture of the local people. Besides, it is also an extremely popular destination for tourism and generates around AU$ 1 billion per year.
Human impact has been limited by designating a major part of the reef as Protected Area by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. However, the park is also subjected to large amount of environmental pressures like climate change with coral bleaching, runoff, and cyclical outbreaks of crown-of-thorn starfish.
The Marine Park houses many uninhabited islands with beautiful beaches, offering opportunities of vacation and exploring the reef area with water activities like snorkelling. Accommodation options range from star rated resorts and hotels to cheaper options like camping.
It is a rare opportunity to explore the wide variety of sea life of the reef that includes about 1500 types of fish including manta rays, anglefish, surgeon fish, cod, mackerel and butterfly fish. Also found are three species of marine turtles like the hawksbill, the green and the loggerhead in the reef waters. The reef is also home to 4000 species of shellfish as well as other marine animals like shrimps, sea stars, crabs, sea fans, crayfish, sea anemones, sea urchins, soft corals and worms.
Divers from all over the world visit the Great Barrier Reef to witness this unique variety of marine life and enjoy facilities like underwater observatories, scuba diving, semi submersibles, snorkelling and trips on glass bottom boats.
