About Hong Kong
Isolated from the mainland of the People's Republic of China by a natural harbour, mountains and a century of British rule, the city of Hong Kong is situated in the Far East, south of the Tropic of Cancer.
Hong Kong comprises of an area of 1097 square kilometres and is 8 hours ahead of the Greenwich Mean Time. A lively and industrialised city, Hong Kong presents a cultural resemblance to that of the Guangdong province of China. A blend of Chinese, Vietnamese and other Asian cultures, Hong Kong is a place to appreciate Asian culture at its best.
English is often spoken and understood in most restaurants, hotels and shops. Being under the British rule for a prolonged period as well as a popular tourist destination and important business centre, various signs, brochures and guidebooks are designed in English rather than Chinese.
However both Chinese and English happen to be the official languages with Cantonese dominating. The major religions are Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.
Hong Kong’s therapeutic foot massages are quite popular with travellers. Another typical Hong Kong characteristic is the bamboo scaffolding in old and new construction sites. The city is also famous for its delicious spread of traditional cuisine.
Hong Kong is a visitor's paradise. With great attractions like the Man Mo Temples and Po Lin Monastery, luxurious accommodations, shops, food and fun filled activities, there is no dearth of excitement for travellers in Hong Kong.
The city is friendly and hospitable with an equally suitable climate. Hong Kong is a beautiful and adventurous city with a peaceful ambience and rich cultural heritage.
