The city of Huangshan is located on the bank of the Yangtze River, in the south eastern part of China and to the south of Anhui province. Zhejiang Province is situated on the eastern side of Huangshan and Jianxi Province to its south. Among the popular mountain ranges in China, the Yellow Mountains or better known as Mt. Huangshan is a notable attraction of the region.
Sprawling across an area of 9807 sq km, Huangshan City has a population of around 1.4 million. It is 15 times larger than Singapore and is the largest city of Anhui Province. Huangshan City comprises three districts, namely Huangshan, Huizhou and Tunxi along with four counties, which are Qimen, Shexian, Xiuning and Yi.
Huangshan City was known as Xin'an Prefecture and Huizou Prefecture in ancient times and got its present name in the year 1987 due to the immense popularity and beauty of Mt. Huangshan or Yellow Mountain. This mountain range is located in the southern part of Anhui province.
Earlier known by the name of Mt. Yishan, the mountain range was renamed in 747 AD after the name of the legendary ancestor of Chinese people Huang Di, who, according to belief, made immortality pills here.
All the mountain ranges in China collectively are known by the name of Wu Yue, these include Mt. Taishan in Shandong Province, Mt. Songshan in Henan Province, Mt. Huashan in Shaanxi Province, Mt. Hengshan in Shanxi Province, and Mt. Hengshan in Hunan Province. The best time to visit Huangshan is the month of April.
Historians often rate this city as a cultural museum of China because of its ancient cultural diversities and wide varieties in artwork. The 20000 years history, well-preserved ancient villages, old residences, archways, clan temples, ancient bridges and pagodas are the attraction of the region.
It is because of these factors combined with suitable climatic conditions, that tourists visit Huangshan city all year round. The city is well connected to the rest of the region, served by upgraded airlines, railways, highways and other local transportation facilities of the city.
Huangshan is a region with wide cultural diversities. In the era of the Jin Dynasty in the period from 265 to 420, this city was known by the name of Xin’an shire and later on the name changed to Huizhou in the Song Dynasty. At that time, the city was popular all over the world for its cultural paintings, varied architecture, and cuisines.
Apart from these, the opera held here is considered the best in the world. Some of the notable scenic spots here are the Yellow Mountain, Tangyue Memorial Archway, crystal Lake Taiping, Qiyun Taoist Mountain, Tunxi Ancient Street etc.
The Yellow Mountains are of key interest in mainland China. Besides, the well-preserved ancient villages Xidi and Hongcun villages in Yixian County, which got its name by the UNESCO are popular attractions and the famous movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was shot here.
