Indonesia is not connected to any of the international countries or cities via rail network. However, one can choose to travel by trains that link major cities like Jakarta, Java and some parts of Sumatra.
There are two main stations in Surabaya, namely Surabaya Gubeng and Surabaya Pasar Turi. For intercity travelling, there are first-class and second-class trains. The first-class train is known as Eksekutif and the second-class train is named as Bisnis. Seats for these trains can be booked at any major railway station in Java.
On the other hand, Tugu station is the primary station of Yogyakarta that connects to Jakarta by rail network and is served by the Taksaka and the Agro Class trains. Lempuyangan train station is another station in Yogyakarta which is located 1 km east of Tugu station. This station is mostly used as a halt for economy class trains.
Train routes in Indonesia
There are four unconnected railway networks in Java and Sumatra. Two major lines run across the entire length of Java. PT Kereta Api is the one operating train services across most parts of Java, along with some parts of Sumatra.
Java has the best railway network in the entire country, with the lines connecting major cities to the capital city Jakarta. These lines connect Jakarta with Surabaya, via Semarang on the north coast as well as through Yogyakarta and Solo via the southern main line.
Bandung is connected to Jakarta by approximately 30 trains per day and is itself connected to Surabaya via Yogyakarta. In order to reach Bali, one has to board the trains from Surabaya to Banyuwangi, from where ferries are available to Bali.
The rail network in Sumatra is connected to Medan in the north and Lampung to Palembang in the southern parts of the islands. Trains operating in Indonesia are classified into three classes, business, air-conditioned and economy.
The best Jakarta-Surabaya train is the Agro Bromo Anggrek service. Trains are also available from Jakarta to Bandung that takes around 3 hours to cover the distance of 173 km between the two destinations.
Indonesia has air-conditioned, business and economy class trains. No sleeping cars are available. Tickets for these trains are available till the last minute, except during the Lebaran season.
The Agro Bromo Anggrek service is an executive-class air conditioned train. Snacks and mineral water are included in the fare. The train is equipped with reclining seats with footrests, however no sleeping births are available. These trains run during the day as well as at night.
