| Basilica Cistern |
|
The Basilica Cistern was built by Constantinople the Great, and commissioned by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century.
Back then, the cistern served as the reservoir for water required for the Byzantine Great Palace. Also known as Yerebatan Sarayi and Sunken Palace, this underground cistern is 140 metres long and 70 metres broad.
Wooden walkways have been constructed over 2 acres of 12 inch deep water and is still visible. The walkways are surrounded by beautiful statues of Medussa. These walkways are used by visitors as a crossing bridge to reach the cavern.
The cathedral-like ceiling cistern is supported from below by 336 columns. The atmosphere is filled with music playing in the background. Besides, it was used as a location for one of the James Bond movie, named 'From Russia with Love' in 1963.
Timing: 9 am – 6:30 pm (Wednesday - Monday)
