| Suleymaniye Mosque |
|
The Suleymaniye Mosque, built in the 16th century, was commissioned by Sultan Sulemaniye I.
One of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture, this mosque stands on a hilltop of the ancient city, over the Golden Horn.
It is the largest mosque of Istanbul and has a huge dome and four pencil-slim minarets on each corner of the courtyard.
In the compounds of the mosque, tombs of the Sultan, his wife Hurrem and Mimar Sinan are found.
Around the courtyard are the original apartments of the mosque astronomer, charitable foundations, caravanserai and fountain.
Several outdoor tea-houses also fall in a row, in the 'Addict's Alley', behind the mosque.
After being closed for restoration in 2008, the Suleymaniye Mosque was reopened in November 2010.
Timing: 9:30 am – 5:30 pm (Daily)
