Jakarta is well linked by trains from across Java. There are two main stations in Jakarta - Jakarta Kota or “Jakaratakota” which is located near the old colonial centre of the city and Jakarta Gambhir or “Gambhir”, located at the modern city centre.
The Indonesian trains comprise of three classes. The Economy class is usually crowded and except for some long-distance trains, seats cannot be reserved. In case of Business class, reservation of seats is mandatory. Only the Executive class is air-conditioned. It offers spacious coaches and reservation of seats are also required.
Jakarta is linked with Surabaya by a number of trains on chiefly two routes. The “Argo Bromo Anggrek” train provides the best service on this route. This air-conditioned train provides service twice daily, during day and at night. It comprises of only executive class and provides reclining seats with footrests. The fare of the train includes the price of mineral water and snacks that are provided during the journey. The overnight trains are a better bargain as the distance between Jakarta and Surabaya is around 450 miles.
Information about train tickets can be obtained from PT Kereta Api (Persero) on the Web, but on-line reservations are not allowed. In Jakarta, tickets can be bought from the major stations up to 30 days in advance. Tickets can be bought before departure every day except on weekends.
