The capital of Jordan, Amman lies between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley. The ultra-modern city was once ruled by the Romans and their architecture can be seen in the ruins of the city.
Towards downtown, one can find the Roman Amphitheater, Citadel, Temple of Herakles and Ummayad Palace, all of which are reminiscent of the Jordanian history. One can find the Islamic and Byzantine style architecture in this capital city.
To the south of Amman lies the city of Petra. A UNESCO World Heritage sight since 1985, the ancient city of Petra has been carved completely out of sandstone. Belonging to the Nabataean era, the entrance of the city is through a narrow Siq.
The al-Deir (Monastery), el Khazneh (The Treasury) monument, the Temple of the Winged Lions and the small Archaeological Museum are the popular sightseeing attractions of the city.
Further, south of Amman lies the 12th century crusader castle and Wadi Rum. Wadi Rum is a desert city that offers some of the most exciting hiking and climbing challenges. Located at a distance of 30 miles from Amman, Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth at 400 metres below sea level.
To the north of Amman lies Jersah that is popular for its Temple of Zeus, the Forum, the Temple of Artemis and a hippodrome that once staged the Roman-style chariot races.
Travelling on the King Hussein highway, one can reach Aqaba from Amman. Jordan’s Red Sea Resort town, Aqaba offers options of water sports and is famous for its seafood.
Other popular places in Jordan include Jordan River, Holy Lands and Mount Nebo, where Christ is said to have been baptised by John. Geographically, the Holy Land is the region of the Levant. Religiously, the place holds significant importance for Islam, Judaism, Christianity and the Bahá'í Faith.
Mount Nebo, an elevated ridge that lies approximately 817 metres above sea level is believed to be the burial spot of Moses. To commemorate the religious significance of this place, a church and monastery were built at the summit, Syagha. One can scale the mountain and view the religiously significant structures.
