Bus
Amman has several bus terminals. One of them is the Abdali Station on King Hussein Street that is the main station. The bus station is located at a five-minute taxi drive from downtown. One mile uphill from Abdali Station is the JETT Depot.
Buses to Aqaba are available from here. Another bus station in Amman is the Wihdat Station that is situated near the Middle Circle. This station is located at a distance of 5 km from the southern part of downtown. One can avail buses for Madaba, Petra, Ma'an and Aqaba from here.
Abdali bus station has now been closed. It has been replaced by Tabarbour Bus Station that is located in the north fringes of Amman. One can reach Ajloun, Jerash or Irbid by taking buses from here. Raghadan Central Bus Station is also another newly constructed bus station, which is situated near the Roman Amphitheater in downtown.
Companies like Alphadt, JETT and Rum Tourist Transport connect the major cities and towns of Jordan. Buses run between Amman, Aqaba, Petra, Jerash and Irbid. Smaller service taxis also connect the cities and towns and run on the routes taken by the buses.
From the Tarbarboor bus station in Amman, buses are available to travel to the other cities in Jordan and to the Queen Alia International Airport. Microbus and service taxis are available from this bus station. Minibuses connect smaller towns in Jordan but the service is not regular.
Train
The only available train service between Jordan and Syria, by Hijaz railway is suspended since 2006. This is because the railway line has been damaged due to the floods. A three-line metro system is under construction in Amman. The project covering the entire city would be completed by 2013.
Taxi
One can also opt for a taxi to travel within Jordan. These taxis have a green logo on the driver and passenger doors. It is mandatory for the taxis to use the metre. The base rate of the taxis is 15.92 INR. The tip for the driver is generally 10 extra piasters.
Shared taxis or servicees provide economical travel. These are white taxis that depart from traffic circles, Abdali circle and the Balad (downtown) in Amman, among others.
Other
Jitneys are another mode of transport available in Amman. Passengers can board the jitneys mid-route, when the vehicles stop to board or disembark passengers. These vehicles generally wait till fully loaded, before leaving their terminals. Visitors can also take a leisure boat tour on the Red Sea and the Dead Sea.
