Kakadu is the largest national park in Australia with a wide variety of wildlife. It is a World Heritage site and is best known for its aboriginal history. The park is stretched across 20,000 square kilometres covering woodlands and forests, which takes long to be explored in totality.
The Kakadu National Park is jointly looked after by Parks Australia as also the Bininj and Mungguy Aborigines who have been living there for the last 50,000 years and are the traditional owners of Kakadu. Much of the parkland belongs to the Aborigines that have been given to the government on lease for current usage. Even most of the rangers are aboriginal people.
There are various tracts of land within the park enclosure that are used for other purposes like uranium mining. There are foaming waterfalls, grassland, trees and quiet lakes within the park. Reptiles, birds, fishes, plants and insects are found in abundance. Huge eucalyptus trees form stretches of canopy. The aboriginal history is painted throughout the rock faces at the Kakadu National Park. The most famous rock art can be found at Nourlangie Rock, Nanguluwur and Ubirr.
There is a continuing debate between the preservers and engineers regarding the presence of uranium deposits within the park site. Entry to the park calls for an entrance fee. A visit to the park might also be arranged with different tour operators. The park lies 100 miles east of Darwin within the Alligator River region of the Northern Territory in Australia. During the two main seasons, various species of migratory birds flock to the park.
The Kakadu National Park facilitates numerous activities like forest walks, boat trips, golfing, bird watching, trekking, camping or swimming in the natural rock pools. It has secured two listings from the UNESCO due to its natural, cultural and historical value. There is limited infrastructure within the park to prevent massive development and constant efforts are being made to preserve the natural habitat within the park.
Jabiru is the main municipal centre. There are accommodations available in the town of Jabiru. Cooinda and South Alligator also have limited accommodation facilities.
Kakadu can be reached by flights to Darwin followed by a car journey. Tours might be availed to Kakadu from Darwin with various travel operators that facilitate trips to Kakadu through coaches or even small airplanes.
