Shopping in Kandy is a primarily about shopping from street side vendors selling souvenirs. One can shop for wall paintings, lacquer wood painting, wood carving, stone carving, metal work, jewellery as well as furniture at The Kandyan Arts and Crafts.
Most of the street vendors are located around the temple area, just like the restaurants. A bit of bargaining can help one save a lot, as the shop keepers usually quote very high prices to start with.
There are not many big malls or department stores in Kandy but the Town Centre is can be put under the organised shopping category. Kandy is known for its Dumbara Mats; these are hand woven with a singular mat weaving style.
Kandy is also famous for Kandyan Jewellery, brass, silver and other metal works. Numerous jewellery shops located all over the town sell authentic goods to the tourists.
Junk jewellery made of brass and other metals is also among popular goods from Kandy, as the designs here are different from those found in India.
The shopkeepers here do not give any receipt on purchase of goods neither are there any duty free shops available in the area. |
