| Guhyeshwari Temple |
|
The Guhyeshwari Temple is located close to the Pashupatinath Temple. It is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. According to folklore, once, Goddess Parvati got angry with Lord Shiva and decided to end her life by burning herself.
When Lord Shiva came to know of this, he wandered with her dead body throughout the world and it is during this process that her yoni, or the female sexual organ fell at the site where the temple stands today.
The villagers of the area built a cenotaph there and slowly, a temple came to be at the place when people started worshipping the structure. The temple is built in the Bhutanese architectural style. The temple gets its name from the amalgamation of two words- Guhya, which means vagina and Ishwari, which means goddess. Non Hindus are not allowed to enter the main sanctum of the temple.
