Situated on the Lamai Beach between Lamai and Hua Thanon Hin Ta and Hin Yai are peculiar natural rock formations that are believed to have been formed by the shipwrecked bodies of an old couple and are thus named as Hin Ta and Hin Yai meaning “Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks.”
The legendary story goes like this: Yai Riem and Ta Kreng living with their son in southern Thai province of Nakhon Sri Thammarat suddenly realised their son was of marriageable age and decided to get him married.
They began their search and got him married to the daughter of Ta Monglay who dwelt in the province of Prachuap Khiri situated about 400 kilometres to the north. On their way to Ta Monglay’s place their boat was caught in a storm and sank near Koh Samui.
Incapable of swimming, both drowned and were turned into rocks that lay as the proof of their noble intentions before the bride’s parents and everyone else to this day.
