Other than car rentals, hiring a taxi can be a good option to travel within Kota Kinabalu.
Bus is another option. Mini buses are cheap and easily available from the mini bus station at the end of the waterfront near Wawasan Plaza.
A mini bus ride costs around RM4 or less depending on the distance and go to places like Inanam, Tawau, Luyang and Penampang. They are not air conditioned.
Metred taxis are available in Kota Kinabalu. However it is better to negotiate a fixed rate beforehand, since most taxi drivers don’t use the metre.
Taxis can be hired for going to places like the Mt Kinabalu National Park and other sightseeing spots. Those available to Mt Kinabalu National Park are found near the Sugar Bun Plaza around the Millimewa supermarket in the central part of the town.
A flat fee is usually charged and takes 4 passengers unless the whole cab is reserved. Taxis charge an additional 50% of the metred fair before 6 am and after midnight.
Other modes of transportation include motorbikes and bicycles. Maps are provided by rental agencies.
