Life in Los Angeles began with the settlement of the Tongva and Chumash Native American tribes in the coastal area, some thousands of years ago. In 1542, Captain Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European arrived in Southern California for establishing the Spanish Empire, however, he did not establish any settlement. Later, on 2 August 1769, Gaspar de Portolà and Juan Crespí reached the present site of Los Angeles.
On 4 September 1781, 44 settlers, known as Los Pobladores, established a permanent colonial settlement and named it El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Porciúncula. The presidio and town was constructed on the orders of King Carlos III of Spain. The city was constructed inland on the river Río Porciúncula, in a traditional Spanish style. The Spanish Empire came to an end in 1821 and the pueblo remained a part of Mexico.
Los Angeles Alta was declared as the regional capital of California during the reign of Mexican ruler, Governor Pío Pico. Later, the MexicanAmerican War in 1846 led to the decline of the Mexican rule. The Treaty of Cahuenga, which was signed on 13 January 1847, ended the phase of the Mexican-American War in California. With the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on 2 February 1848, California came under the rule of the US and all the wars ended.
