Travelling to Maldives

Malé International Airport is the main airport in the country that serves international flights to various destinations across the world. The airport is located on the island of Hulhule, which is 2 km from the capital city. This airport is the main entry point of the country and serves both international and domestic flights. The airport levies a departure tax of 455.49 INR.

The airport serves flights like Emirates Airlines, Sas Scandinavian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Czech Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Sri Lankan Airlines. The airport has regular flights to popular destinations, including Colombo, Dubai, Thiruvananthapuram and Kuala Lumpur. Facilities at the airport like bank, pharmacy, duty free shops, bureau de change, restaurant and post office are available.

Apart from the international airport, Maldives has also developed 4 domestic airports. These include Hanimadhoo Domestic airport, Gan Domestic Airport, Kadhdhoo Domestic Airport and Kaadedhdhoo Domestic Airport.

Hanimadhoo Domestic Airport is situated in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. The airport is served by chartered planes that have a maximum of 60 seats. Gan Domestic Airport lies in the Addu Atoll and is linked by airlines like Trans Maldivian Airways and Mega Global Air. The facilities available at this airport include car parking, information desk and baggage inquiry.

Kadhdhoo Domestic Airport that is located in the Laamu Atoll can accommodate only short take-off and landing aircrafts. Kaadedhdhoo Domestic Airport is situated in the Huvadhoo Atoll. It serves domestic flights to Malé International Airport.            

With nearly 40 flights per week, SriLankan Airlines has become the largest international carrier serving Maldives. Most of the international flights from different parts of the world flying to Maldives halt at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka. SriLankan Airlines, Mihin Lanka, Emirates and Oman Air serve nearly 10 flights daily between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Main Airports
Malé Iinternational Airport is jointly managed by the GMR Group and Malaysia Airports. The airport is situated 6 feet above sea level. It serves various regular and seasonal flights around the world.

XL Airways France from Paris, Singapore Airlines from Singapore, Thomson Airways from London, SriLankan Airlines from Colombo and London and Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur serve regular flights to Malé International Airport.

The other carriers flying to the island country include Condor from Frankfurt, Bangkok Airways from Bangkok, Blue Panorama Airlines from Milan and Rome and Edelweiss Air from Zürich, among others. More than 25 airlines provide direct scheduled and chartered flights to Maldives from various cities.

The airport has duty-free shops, post office, internet access and foreign exchange service. Other facilities include free shower, 24-hour healthcare centre and children’s playground.

Hanimadhoo Domestic airport is situated in Haa Dhaalu Atoll in Maldives. The airport is located at a distance of 287.57 km from Malé. It takes about 45 minutes by flight from Hanimadhoo Domestic airport to Malé International Airport. The airport serves 36 domestic flights per week. Trans Maldivian Airways operates out of Hanimaadhoo Domestic airport for Malé.  

Kadhdhoo Domestic Airport is located in Laamu Atoll in Maldives. It lies at a distance of 3.7 km to the north-east of Fonadhoo. Island Aviation operates domestic flights from this airport which connects the various hotels and resorts of the island country.

Another domestic airport of the country, the Kaadedhdhoo Domestic Airport is located in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll in Maldives. Island Aviation Services operates domestic flights from the airport to the other islands of the country.

Gan Domestic Airport is the major airport at the Gan Island. The various facilities available at this airport are car parking, information desk and baggage inquiry. The domestic terminal of Gan airport serves the Island Aviation Services and Trans Maldivian Airways flights to Malé.

The newly developed international airport serves Condor Airlines to Frankfurt and Blue Panorama to Milan. The development of the international airport at Gan is aimed to promote the southern tourism zone of Addu and Huvadhu Atoll.
