Maldives Sightseeing

Maldives is a preferred tourist destination by Europeans and ranks as the most   attractive tourist spot in the tropics. Abundant in rich natural resources, the country aims at the protection of its flora and fauna by promoting eco-tourism. Amidst the rich biological diversity in the beautiful atolls, one can also find numerous sightseeing options in the Maldives.

Visitors can pay a visit to the Grand Friday Mosque, which is the biggest mosque of Maldives. The mosque was constructed in 1656 by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar. In front of the mosque lies the Maldives Mulee Aage Palace that was built before World War I by Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III. The oldest mosque of the country, Hukuru Miskiiy, was built by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar I.

One wishing to gain an insight to the history of the country can visit the National Museum that is a part of an old palace building. It is located in Sultan Park. Esjehi Art Gallery, another historic monument is situated to the east of Sultan Park.

The Republic square of Maldives, Jumhoorie Maidan is one of the most popular places for social gatherings. Mohammed Thakurufaanu Tomb is an important landmark of the country. This is because Sultan Mohammed Thakurufaanu was instrumental in liberating the country from the colonial rule of the Portuguese.

Travellers can also relax and pamper themselves at the Artificial Beach and other beaches that dot the various islands of the country. The beaches are rich in coconuts and tropical fruits.
