The weather in Maldives is highly influenced by the Indian Ocean and the large landmass of South Asia to the north. The Indian Ocean acts as the heat buffer of the country by helping in absorption, storage and slow release of the tropical heat.
The average temperature in Maldives ranges from 24° Celsius (75 °F) to 33° Celsius (91 °F).
The tropical climate of Maldives is distinguished into two seasons. The dry season extending from December to March is characterised by the north-eastern monsoon. This season is followed by the rainy season from May to November that is accompanied with wet southwestern monsoon. Strong winds and storms are commonly experienced during these months.
The annual rainfall of the country averages 2,540 millimetres in the north and 3,810 millimetres in the south. The transition in the season becomes evident in April, which is characterised by clear water and heat.
The islands of the Maldives enjoy the dry monsoon with little rain and lower humidity during the high season from December to April. February to April is the hottest period and also the major tourist season of the country.
The number of tourists visiting the Maldives drastically reduces from May to November because of storms and rain. With the exception of August, this is the low season in Maldives from the tourism point of view.
