Sightseeing in the country comprises visits to World Heritage Sights like Aapravasi Ghat, historical monuments, museums, wildlife parks, religious destinations and beaches. Port Louis, Curepipe, Rose Hill and Vacoas are among the popular sightseeing destinations in Mauritius.
Le Morne Cultural Landscape and Aapravasi Ghat are the two World Heritage Sights recognised by UNESCO located on this island country. The historical sights of the island include the ruins of the European settlement and monuments belonging to the same period.
The Dutch ruins and the Balaclava ruins located at Vieux Grand Port offer a glimpse into the mediaeval history of the country. There are around 66 national monuments in the Port Louis district, while 62 other national monuments are located throughout the entire country. Some of the popular monuments in Mauritius include the Rum Warehouse, General Post Office, Trou Fanfaron Police Station and Fort Adelaide.
Being a multi-cultural country there are various religious sites, including temples like Meenatchee Ammen Temple, churches and mosques in different towns of the country. Some of the most popular temples in Mauritius are Bon Espoir kovil, Grand Bassin, Meenatchee Ammen Temple and Shri krishnamoorthy Draupadi Ammen.
Tourists can also make a visit to some of the famous mosques and churches located within the island, including Al-Aqsa Mosque, Flacq mosque, St-Francois-Xavier and Cathedral St-Louis.
The beaches of the country offer a host of marine activities, including water-skiing, sailing, swimming, windsurfing, fishing and boating. Some of the famous beaches of Mauritius include Blue Bay, Pereybere, Le Morne, Grand Bay, Tamarin, Belle Mare and Flic-en-Flac.
The country also contains several wildlife parks that are home to a variety of endemic and rare species like Bengal Tigers and lemurs. La Vanille Crocodiles Park, Ile aux Aigrettes, Black River Gorges National Park and Domaine du Chasseur are some of the major wildlife parks on this island.
