In Melaka, tourists can buy traditional Dutch wooden clogs, Indian clothing, handmade tiles, charms, crystals, antiques and much more. Tourists from nearby places like Singapore visit Melaka in huge numbers just to shop for clothing and household items as the prices in Melaka are much lower.
The city has several flea markets but it’s the Jonkar Street that attracts tourists the most. Bargaining is a common practice among shoppers on the streets. Jalan Hang Lekir is a flea market which stays open until 3 pm on Sundays. The merchants at this market sell all types of used items from books and magazines to clothing and household goods. It is a great haunt for bargain hunters.
Melaka has several modern shopping complexes. Examples include Mahkota Parade Shopping Centre at Plaza Mahkota, Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, A'Famosa Safari and Theme Park and Plaza Melaka Raya at the Taman Melaka Raya.
Tourism and manufacturing are two main economic sectors in Melaka. There are over two dozens of industrial estates with over 500 factories roughly from the United States, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, and Singapore. These factories produce food items, consumer products, electronic gadgets etc, and most of the items find their way to the local markets.
There are several duty-free shops in the city as well. Like Singapore, however, Melaka doesn’t have a provision of GST or SST refund to tourists.
Jonker Street Jonker Street is one of the main shopping hubs in Melaka. The street is also a paradise for antique shoppers. A wide range of items, including authentic antique items, are sold on the busy Jonker Street.
The streets are narrow and most are one way, which adds to Melaka’s historical charm. Apart from antique shops, there are a variety of furniture shops and art galleries. The Dutch Square houses one of Melaka’s largest shopping malls, which offers shoppers virtually anything they want.
Jonkar Street’s flea market also is a major attraction. The traders here sell all types of used items from books and magazines to clothing and household goods. Jonker Street has numerous food stalls and restaurants catering to a wide variety of tastes, including authentic Malaysian cuisine also.
