A favourite tourist destination, the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple located in the old city was established in 1648, and is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia.
Within walking distance are the Kampung Kling mosque and the Hindu temple of Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthy. These are fine examples of the religious tolerance that existed and still exists in the place.
The 17th century building was restored in 2005 and it stands today as a magnificent example of South China architecture.
