The region is known for its adventure sports and activities. A number of picturesque routes are available for trekkers to follow. Not all these routes are challenging - there are also less strenuous routes for less experienced travellers. Many of the routes run through villages where you can find food and a place to rest. Travellers say that trekking or mountain climbing in the Himalayas is a unique and often humbling experience.
The Everest Base Camp is a popular destination for trekkers and is quite close to the region of Khumbu.
Khumbu is an ideal place to start the Island Peak trek and this trek follows the same route of the Everest Base Camp, until separating at Dingboche.
The region has a unique culture. Mingle with the local population, and hear the amazing and often amusing stories that the Sherpas have to tell. The Sherpas are an extremely hospitable people. Most are fluent in English or at the very least have a passable knowledge of the language.
An excursion to Phortse village on the mountain opposite Tengboche, can be entertaining. The quaint village of Phortse is a typical Nepalese mountain village reached through a scenic mountain pass and affords some truly majestic views of the valley.
