Though the public transportation system of Nepal is extensive, tourists often opt for rented cars for getting around the country or travelling within cities like Kathmandu. Not many international car rental agencies provide services in Nepal, except Hertz and Sixt. However, domestic agencies in Nepal provide different models of cars and vans.
Depending upon the budget and number of passengers, tourists can avail one of the many available options, most common of which are car and van. Other vehicles provided by different car rental agencies include haice, coaster, mini bus, shuttle bus and deluxe bus. Four seater Land cruisers are also available.
In Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara Valley, cars are usually available for 3 hours for half day sightseeing tours and for 6 hours for full day sightseeing tours. One can also rent a car for tours in and around the place.
Only old and reconditioned or new but small cars can be seen in Nepal due to the prices of cars and gasoline. For renting a car, one should be over 25 years of age and hold an international driving permit. However, those between the age of 21 and 25 can also rent a car after paying the additional young driver's surcharge.
Car rental charges in Nepal are usually inclusive of gas, permit, road tax, driver, support staff (if necessary) and allowance for driver and support staff. However, other charges like the expenses of meals & tips, entrance fee of sites, tourist guide and extra time are excluded from the tariff. For air-conditioned vehicles, 25% extra fee is charged.
Beginning from $14, the rates of car rentals in Nepal vary in accordance with the type of vehicle, time and distance. Prices are usually $15 to $310 for car; $30 to $622 for van and $35 to $777 INR for haice. Bigger vehicles like minibus and coaster cost $40 to $1088.
