Although New Zealand is a small country, the diverse landscape offers opportunity to enjoy all kind of activities, be it adventure sports, water sports or aerial activities. It is the birthplace of adventurous activities like zorbing, bungee jumping and jet-boating.
Queenstown, a resort town in New Zealand's South Island is regarded as the centre for adventure sports. White water rafting, rap jumping, river sledging and surf rafting are among the other popular adventure sports.
Surrounded by water on all sides, this island country offers endless possibilities for water sports like windsurfing, swimming and sailing. Other water sports available are boat cruises, kayaking, scuba diving, kite surfing, fishing and parasailing. Ideal spots for water sports are Bay of Islands, Northland, Mahia Peninsula, Kaikoura and Wairoa.
During winter, activities like skiing and snowboarding can be done in New Zealand. Popular ski regions in the country are Whakapapa, Mount Hutt, Queenstown and several regions in the Southern Alps.
Visitors can also indulge in aerial activities like scenic flights, paragliding, gliding, sky diving, hot air ballooning and hang gliding. Otago, Canterbury, Christchurch and Queenstown are some of the popular places for aerial activities.
New Zealand's landscape leaves scope for activities like road driving, abseiling/rappelling, walking, canyoning and hunting. Caving in Waitomo Caves, mountaineering in Mount Cook Region and cycling in Mount Ruapehu and Otago Peninsula are other land activities that attract adventure lovers.
New Zealand has some of the unique species of flora and fauna, due to which the spotting wildlife is highly popular in the country. Spotting species like penguins, kiwi, kea, kakapo (world's largest parrot), weta and tuatara can be done at places like Taiaroa Head and Stewart Island.
