Located in the Southern Hemisphere, New Zealand experiences cool temperate to warm temperate climate. Mountains and sea are the two geographical features that affect the climate of this country.
Unexpected changes in weather and temperature within a day is common in New Zealand. Despite climatic variation, the overall temperature is mild and rainfall is moderately high.
Summers in New Zealand extend from December till February. Average temperature during this season is around 22° Celsius, but on certain days temperature can go as high as 30° Celsius.
Summers are marked by long sunny days and milder nights. March marks the beginning of autumn season that extends till May. The average temperature of the country during this season is around 18° Celsius.
After autumn, the temperature starts dropping and marks the beginning of the winter season. Winters in New Zealand start from June and extend till August. The temperature during this season ranges between 10° Celsius and 15° Celsius.
During winters, most of the areas of North Island experience high rainfall. On the contrary, the temperature in South Island is cooler but rain is relatively less. During this time, snowfall is seen in the mountainous areas of the country.
September through November comprise the spring months, with maximum variations in weather. During spring, the weather can change from cold and frosty to warm and humid. Rainfall in New Zealand is evenly distributed throughout the year and ranges between 640 mm to 1500 mm.
New Zealand receives around 2000 hours of sunshine every year. The Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, Nelson and Marlborough are the sunniest areas with around 2350 hours of sunshine per year. Owing to low air pollution, UV rays from the sun are strong in New Zealand.
Tourists can visit New Zealand anytime as every season has something or the other in store. For outdoor exploration, November to April is considered the best time. During the months of December through February, food festivals and sports events attract numerous tourists.
