Travelling to Penang

There are international flights that directly connect to the island. Penang has direct links to Bangkok, Medan, Chennai, Singapore, Nagoya and Xiamen. Around 20 flights of Malaysia Airlines fly between Penang and Kuala Lumpur. The other airlines that service this airport are Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Air Asia.

The national train company of Penang is KTMB. The train ride to Butterworth from Kuala Lumpur takes about 9 hours. After reaching Butterworth, one can opt for a ferry or taxi to reach the island.

Penang can be reached by road too from Butterworth by the North-South Highway. After reaching Butterworth, a ferry should be taken to reach the island. Facilities for transporting cars are also available against a fee. One can also use the Penang Bridge that joins the island to the mainland.

The Penang Bayan Lepas International Airport is considered one of the larger and better-equipped airports of Malaysia. The airport is located on the south-eastern coast of the island and takes nearly 30 minutes from George Town. Tourists can avail the airlines that service this airport like the Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines and Air Asia.

A Rapid Penang Bus service is available from the terminal building of the airport that takes tourists to KOMTAR. A train service is also available that runs between Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth. A number of ferries and taxis are available from Butterworth to take visitors to Penang. If travelling by car tourists can also avail the Penang Bridge that connects the mainland with the island.
